Brett Hull turns 50 this week

March 7, 1988 was perhaps the greatest day in St. Louis hockey history. It was on that day that the Calgary Flames traded Brett Hull and Steve Bozek to the St. Louis Blues for Rob Ramage and Rick Wamsley. The “Golden Brett” would play 11 years here, scoring 527 regular season goals and another 67 in the playoffs. Hull is now an executive vice president with the Blues. “Hullie” turns 50 this Saturday. Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has a write-up on Hull complete with quotes from his former teammates.

Guardians of the Galaxy soars with $94 million

Guardians of the Galaxy set a new record for the biggest August premiere ever. The previous high-water mark was $69.3 million. Lucy took second with $18.2 million and Get On Up took third with $14 million. We’ll have a more detailed look at the numbers on Thursday in our Weekend Movie Guide.

St. Louis Cardinals win two over the weekend; move to one game back

The Cardinals won the two games over the weekend against the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers to move one game out of the National League Central and a half game out of the Wild Card lead. Adam Wainwright had a rare poor outing on Friday night, picking up the loss in the 7-4 decision. Newcomers Justin Masterson and John Lackey were the winning pitchers on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The weekend performance boosted the perception of the recent moves by general manager John Mozeliak. Trevor Rosenthal picked up the save in each of the wins. He now leads the league with 34. The Cardinals are off today before starting a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox tomorrow at Busch. Wednesday night’s game will see the recently traded Joe Kelly making his first start for the Red Sox. He’ll face his good pal Shelby Miller. Another storyline will be A.J. Pierzynski facing former teammates, the ones that didn’t exactly shed a tear when he was released.

Nicki Minaj is coming to St. Louis!!

I haven’t been this excited about a concert being in town since college, when I saw Jared Leto on the street, followed him, and found out his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, was playing at The Canopy Club across the street from my house. I won’t go into further detail as some may think my actions became stalkerish…but the point is…Nicki Minaj is coming to St. Louis!

Thank goodness for The Peabody re-opening it’s doors so we can enjoy ridiculously amazing talents such as Nicki Minaj!

Of course, there are other amazing musical talents coming to all of our venues this year, but Nicki is just…well she’s Nicki, revered by country artists, talk show hosts, women who love the color pink, young children from England (watch them sing Starships below)…basically everyone!

Since Nicki’s career exploded in 2010, she has become like the female Michael Jackson (ok, maybe I’m being a bit dramatic, don’t attack me people), but seriously, like the whole world has created a video cover of her song Super Bass on YouTube.

Listen, I didn’t say they were all good…I’m just solidifying the point that everyone has one.

Not to mention she probably (I’m guessing) holds the record for collaborating with the most artists in the shortest period of time, and not just any old artists, she started out of the gate collaborating with some of the biggest artists in the industry, from Mariah Carey to Britney to Madonna, Rihanna, will.i.am, B.o.B, Ludacris, Chris Brown, Usher, Kanye, Sean Kingston, Sophia and Grace (haha they’re the 2 girls in the first video), and rumor has it…Justin Bieber is next. She was even cool enough to come out and sing her own song with country artist Taylor Swift on Taylor’s Speak Now Tour.

I mean, seriously, what’s next? How about her coming to The Peabody Opera House for her Pink Friday tour on July 31st, promoting her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded album
release? Tickets went on sale May 12th so there’s probably not a lot of time left to purchase yours. Don’t miss the boat. Ticket prices start at $48.70…not too bad.

Nip/Tuck: The Rise And Fall (And Rise) Of Lil' Kim.

OLD Lil Kim

Plastic surgery in Hollywood (and especially music) should not be a huge chagrin to people.  It seems like almost everyone has went under the knife, whether it was to retain a certain sense of beauty, to enhance something that was not up to industry standard, or to just have it done to be in the cool crowd was never something that people really tripped off.

Cher, Dolly Parton, Melanie Griffith, and Demi Moore are few of the people who have proudly admitted to going under the scalpel…and the results haven’t been that bad.  (save for Melanie Griffith, in my opinion.)

Then we have people like Michael Jackson (may he rest in peace), his sister LaToya, Joycelyn Wildenstein (also known as The Lion Lady), and recently, Lil’ Kim, who have abused the ability to correct and enhance their God-given features.

NEW Lil Kim

To some, Lil’ Kim is definitely not known for her rapping.  (And neither is newcomer Nicki Minaj, if you ask me.) I have been fortunate to have witnessed Lil’ Kim in her pre-plastic days, therefore I am not oblivious to her musical talent.  But to others she is just a washed up has-been who has gone to prison, competed on Dancing With The Stars, and is a homewrecker who allegedly slept her way to the top, all the while indulging in a little nippy tuck here and there.

No disrepect, but it seems like after MJ passed away Lil’ Kim made no haste in snatching the torch to become the next poster child for plastic surgery.  Multiple breast implants, nose jobs, skin bleaching procedures, endoscopic brow lifts (forehead lift), lip augmentations, and possible chin and cheek implants has left this once Plain Jane Black girl from Brooklyn looking….well, you know…. not Black.  Kim has lost much of her ethnicity and looks completely overdone.  Her mega sized breasts are far too big for her 4 foot 11 frame and her cheek implants, button nose, plump lips, and blue contact lenses look incredibly unauthentic.  To me, she looks like something you would see on the Adult Swim program on the Cartoon Network after 11 pm.  No shade.

Despite all of the above, if one looked at Lil’ Kim without knowing what she looked like prior to her “makeover”, one could say that she’d be cute…albeit, in a fake dollar store Barbie doll kind of way.

My question is: when is enough…enough?
