Brett Hull turns 50 this week

March 7, 1988 was perhaps the greatest day in St. Louis hockey history. It was on that day that the Calgary Flames traded Brett Hull and Steve Bozek to the St. Louis Blues for Rob Ramage and Rick Wamsley. The “Golden Brett” would play 11 years here, scoring 527 regular season goals and another 67 in the playoffs. Hull is now an executive vice president with the Blues. “Hullie” turns 50 this Saturday. Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has a write-up on Hull complete with quotes from his former teammates.

Guardians of the Galaxy set a new record for the biggest August premiere ever. The previous high-water mark was $69.3 million. Lucy took second with $18.2 million and Get On Up took third with $14 million. We’ll have a more detailed look at the numbers on Thursday in our Weekend Movie Guide.

St. Louis Cardinals win two over the weekend; move to one game back

The Cardinals won the two games over the weekend against the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers to move one game out of the National League Central and a half game out of the Wild Card lead. Adam Wainwright had a rare poor outing on Friday night, picking up the loss in the 7-4 decision. Newcomers Justin Masterson and John Lackey were the winning pitchers on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The weekend performance boosted the perception of the recent moves by general manager John Mozeliak. Trevor Rosenthal picked up the save in each of the wins. He now leads the league with 34. The Cardinals are off today before starting a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox tomorrow at Busch. Wednesday night’s game will see the recently traded Joe Kelly making his first start for the Red Sox. He’ll face his good pal Shelby Miller. Another storyline will be A.J. Pierzynski facing former teammates, the ones that didn’t exactly shed a tear when he was released.
