Three  films make their debuts at the box office this weekend to try to knock Gravity from its perch as the “#1 movie in America”. Stephen King’s Carrie gets a second film treatment 40 years after the original. Wikileaks also gets the big screen treatment in The Fifth Estate. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Slyvester Stallone, a combined 133 years old, team with rapper 50 Cent in the action/mystery/thriller flick Escape Plan.

The domestic box office topped $100 million for a second consecutive weekend last weekend thanks in large part to Gravity. The Sandra Bullock and George Clooney space thriller is being fueled by incredibly strong reviews, from critics both professional and amateur. In just 12 days of wide release, it has already taken in $200 million worldwide on its $100 million budget.  Captain Phillips brought in $25.7 million in its opening weekend, which makes it the 87th highest-grossing-movie-to-not-top-the-box-office. It ranks just above Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection, which somehow brought it $52.4 million in its opening weekend last year. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: 2 came in third with $13 million. In just under three full weeks of release the film has brought in $103 million worldwide on an $80 million budget.

On to what’s out there to see. Here’s your Weekend Movie Guide.

Carrie

The original Carrie brought in $34 million at the box office in 1976 and turned the Stephen King story into a cult classic. Chloe Grace Moretz plays the troubled high school senior who has a rather interesting prom night. Moretz recently graced the big screen as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass 2. The Carrie remake should far well at the box office with it being the only horror flick out this close to Halloween. This marketing stunt certainly won’t hurt the movie either.

The Fifth Estate

The Fifth Estate attempts to tell the story of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks. The tech magazine Wired liked the film, although it said the film took some liberties with the actual story.

Escape Plan

Arnold and Sly may have lost a step or two, much like Benny “The Jet” Rodriquez, but they are still a good “popcorn movie” bet at the box office. While both of their most recent movies bombed at the box office, the pair have brought in a combined $3.5 billion in ticket sales in their careers.

Catch It While You Can

Planes, Riddick and Lee Daniels: The Butler all make their debuts this weekend at “the land of misfit movies”. If you have kids, go see Planes. The Butler is a movie that doesn’t really call one to see it in the theater versus just waiting for it to arrive at your local Redbox. Riddick is a movie that you need to see in the theaters if it interests you.

Make It A Redbox Night

 The Colony

Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton star in this straight-to-video flick about a frozen world where humans are forced to live in underground outposts. The Colony is the first film shot at the decommissioned North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) base in Ontario. This film won’t be winning any Oscars. The New York Times called it “two thirds of a pretty good sci-fi suspense movie.” It might be worth spending $1.20 and curling up with a homemade bowl of Orville Redenbacher.

Ryan

Ryan is a weird dude. He doesn't cook, yet owns a plethora of kitchen gadgets. He rationalized buying a SodaStream while unemployed. He counts Step Up 2: The Streets as one of his favorite movies along with Footloose, Rent, Grease and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. He loves Mizzou but only wants them in the SEC so he can tailgate in Nashville. He owns a ShakeWeight and AbLounger, but still loves him some John Donut and Billie's Fine Foods. You can get more of Ryan at iLoveSoulard.com or just check the stool on the far end of the bar at iTap in Soulard.
