Recapping Last Weekend

It broke The Hitman’s Bodyguard‘s hold on the weekend box office crown in a big with during its debut weekend. The horror film with a budget of just $35 million made $123.4 million over the course of its debut weekend.

Home Again, also in its debut weekend, was in a very, very distant second place over the weekend. The movie starring Reese Witherspoon made just shy of $8.6 million over the weekend.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which held the top spot at the box office for three weekends in a row, made $4.8 million in its fourth weekend of release.

Opening This Weekend

American Assassin

Vince Flynn is finally coming to the big screen. The best-selling author of the Mitch Rapp series gets his first film adaptation with American Assassin, in theaters this weekend.

Dylan O’Brien, the star of the Maze Runner movies and the Teen Wolf television series, gets the chance to bring Rapp to the big screen. Although O’Brien, at 26-years old, is a bit younger and less “grizzled” than many book fans pictured Rapp being, his casting didn’t create nearly the uproar that Tom Cruise’s did portraying Jack Reacher.

O’Brien was set begin the Rapp chapter of his career after filming the lastest Maze Runner movie in Canada.  However, the filming of Maze Runner: The Death Cure was halted after O’Brien fell from one vehicle and was hit by another on-set. After undergoing surgery and therapy, the actor went on to film Assassin before restarting Maze Runner production a year after the accident. O’Brien told the Los Angeles Times recently that he feels his experience brought him closer to Flynn’s character.

“It felt like this version of me at the time, always trying to hide from people,” he says. “I was in a really dark place. Obviously, I didn’t experience what he goes through, but that summer when I was in recovery, I was going through a lot. Funny enough, I felt so deeply connected to the dude, and I don’t think I would have known how to play him if this hadn’t happened.”

Flynn, sadly, did not live to see his character in theaters. The author passed away in June 2013 after a three-year battle with prostate cancer. His widow called American Assassin a “celebration of Vince” and said her late husband would have been pleased with the film.

The 16th book in the Mitch Rapp series, Enemy of the State, was released earlier this month. Kyle Mills  has taken over the series and authored the last three books.

American Assassin also stars Michael Keaton and Sanaa Lathan.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $13.3 million for American Assassin.

Mother!

Mother!, starring Jennifer Lawrence,  Michelle Pfeiffer, Javier Bardem and Ed Harris, opens in theaters this weekend.  The drama/horror/mystery film is Lawrence’s only film of 2017. No big holiday release this year for Lawrence, the highest-paid actress in the world in 2015 and 2016, like Joy or Passengers.

Mother! is not for the faint-hearted. Then again, interviews with Lawrence aren’t really either.  A review of the film in the National Review, written by Kyle Smith, doesn’t pull any punches in warning people about the film.

Mother, an exercise in torture porn, may be the vilest movie ever released by a major Hollywood studio.

Wondering why Lawrence would sign on to star in a movie that may end up as the “most hated movie of 2017?” The film is directed by her boyfriend, Darren Aronofsky, but clearly Lawrence makes her own decisions in regards to her career. The actress has strong feelings about this “feminist” film as she calls it. Strongly enough that she tore her diaphragm and popped her chest rib out during filming.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $14.7 million for Mother!.
