Recapping Last Weekend
Despicable Me 3 came in just shy of $100 million over the extended Fourth of July holiday weekend. At more than $99 million, the film easily took the top spot at the box office. Another film making its debut, Baby Driver, pulled in an impressive $40 million and is poised for a strong second weekend based on equally impressive word-of-mouth reviews.
Wonder Woman brought in more than $24 million in receipts to push its total domestic take to over $350 million since its release. Worldwide, the film starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins, has taken in more than $700 million in receipts.
Transformers: The Last Knight passed the $100 million mark domestically in its second weekend of release. The latest film in the franchise has been a big success overseas, however. The film with a budget of $217 million has brought in 75 percent of its worldwide total overseas and current sits at roughly $449 million.
The House, starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler, brought in $11.9 million in its debut.
Opening This Weekend
It’s hard to believe that Spider-Man stars in a film that The Atlantic calls “one of the best superhero movies in years.” Recent turns in the spandex by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire haven’t resulted in great movies. Tom Holland stepped into his spandex suit first in Captain America: Civil War and now gets his own movie.
The film also features Robert Downey, Jr. in his Iron Man role, Michael Keaton as The Vulture, Marisa Tomei, Donald Glover, Jon Favreau and Zendaya. Jennifer Connelly doesn’t appear in Homecoming, but she can be heard as the voice of Peter Parker’s Spider-Man suit.
The Hollywood Reporter has a great write-up on the history of Keaton’s Vulture character.
Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $117.8 million for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
