It’s another light weekend at the box office with one movie opening that sounds a lot like Taken in Prisoners and another that might as well be Step Up: 13 in Battle of the Year.

Both movies I mentioned last week Insidious: Chapter 2 and The Family had good weekends like we thought they would. Insidious just happened to have have a good weekend to about the fifth degree. The horror film sequel with a $5 million budget pulled in $40.2 million over the weekend and will be at $44 million by the time you read this. Chapter 1 pulled in $13 million in it’s opening weekend back in April of 2011. The Family came in second for the weekend with a take of $14.2 million. Look for it to stay steady for a couple weeks.  Riddick dropped 64% in its second weekend to $6.8 million. I would imagine The Family won’t drop this far. Lee Daniels’ The Butler took in $5.5 million to top the $100 million mark at the domestic box office in its fifth week.

Prisoners is going to have an uphill battle to take the top spot this weekend. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Insidious wasn’t a big hit with critics but pleased 70% of it’s audience. Hugh Jackman stars as Keller Dover, a father whose daughter his kidnapped along with her friend. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the detective investigating the case. With the reviews this one is getting, it very well could do better in its second week than its first based on word of mouth traffic. See in at MX Movies this weekend.

Battle of the Year won’t be stealing much of an audience from Prisoners. If you can’t wait for Step Up 5, which is in production now by the way, then this movie is for you. It’s inspired by an actual dance battle competition that takes place in France every year.

Still Playing

Instructions Not Included has pulled in $28 million in just 19 days at the box office. It’s widest release thus far has been in 933 theaters. Compare that to the 3,000+ a big-budget movie usually opens with.

Catch It While You Can

Kick-Ass 2 makes its debut this weekend at our favorite $3 movie theater, Keller Plaza Cine 8. Red 2 also opens on the second-run screens. While it failed to get to the numbers that the 2010 Red did, it still stars Bruce Willis and a host of others and looks well worth your hard-earned dollars.

Make It A Redbox Night

Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring is my suggestion this week of what to pick up at your local Redbox. It’s based on true events of some teens that stalked celebrities and then stole millions from them. Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were reported to be among the victims of the teens. Here’s a look at what happened to all of those involved. Here’s the lowdown on the case if you want to brush up before seeing the movie.  While some critics didn’t really like the whole movie, Emma Watson appears to be worth the $1. 20 by herself.

Ryan is a weird dude. He doesn't cook, yet owns a plethora of kitchen gadgets. He rationalized buying a SodaStream while unemployed. He counts Step Up 2: The Streets as one of his favorite movies along with Footloose, Rent, Grease and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. He loves Mizzou but only wants them in the SEC so he can tailgate in Nashville. He owns a ShakeWeight and AbLounger, but still loves him some John Donut and Billie's Fine Foods.
