It’s only the first weekend in May and I’m already exhausted. Having the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo on the same weekend I’m sure can’t be good for my liver, but there’s no way I’m missing out on a wearing a giant floppy hat…I’m referring to a Kentucky Derby hat, not a sombrero. Either way, there are tons of excellent activities to join in on this weekend:

grapes and the garden Grapes and The Garden: An event sponsored by Schnuck’s at the Botanical Garden. An evening sampling fine wines, hors d’ oeuvres and live music. Tickets are $45 for adults and include a souvenir wine glass and sampling over 100 wines. Tickets for designated drivers are $15.

Time: 5:30-8:30pm

st. louis science center Star Trek vs Star Wars at the St. Louis Science Center: An evening of free, sci-fi themed activities including: free OMNIMAX movie, either Star Trek VI or Star Wars Episode VI at 10pm, a costume contest, first Friday’s trivia, Planetarium demonstrations, a free public telescope viewing and a space-themed photo booth. Additionally, there will be laser shows available for $10 and flight simulator rides for $5.

St. Louis Microfest St. Louis Microfest: A 2 day festival featuring international and craft beers from over 75 breweries. On top of the beer tastings, tickets include a tasting glass, live music from bands such as Spontaneous Nugent, Sean Coray, Billy Barnett Band and more, access to cooking and brewing demonstrations from Kenrick’s, Bat Creek Brewing, Boulevard Brewery, Hautly Cheese and many more. There will also be a silent auction and food available for purchase from Hendrick’s BBQ, Steamroller Bagel and Deli and more. The festival benefits Lift for Life Gym, an organization that provides a safe, enriching environment to at-risk children in st. Louis to help them achieve success. Ticket prices vary per session. VIP tickets are available, which additionally include masterpieces prepared by Chef Tom Coghill of Iron Barley, a pilsner souvenir glass and tastes from additional exclusive beers.

stlstorytelling festival 34th Annual St. Louis Storytelling Festival: A four day event featuring over 40 regional storytellers including: Milbre Burch, a grammy nominated recording artist and internationally known Oracle Award winning storyteller, CJ Jones, a Tony Award winning entertainer and so many more, that takes place all over St. Louis. The festival is coordinated by The School of Professional & Continuing Studies at UMSL. The festival provides students of all ages the opportunity to experience a wide variety of culturally diverse traditional, literary and historical stories and the the tools for educators and parents to help students become more successful. Special events include a deaf storytelling program on Thursday, May 2nd at 6:30pm, Ghost Stories at Faust Park on ZThursday, May 2nd at 7pm, a Youth Storytelling Concert on Saturday, May 4th and sooo many others, plus a Grand Finale Event at Touhill Performing Arts Center on Saturday, May 4th from 7:30-9:30pm. cottonbelt depot Riverside Rally: Join the St. Louis Community in helping revitalize the old Cotton Belt Depot as it transforms into a St. Louis Welcome Mural. RallySTL was able to help get this project funded and on Saturday, May 4th, the project will begin. Volunteer to help garden, landscape and paint the historic Cotton Belt Depot. Besides being part of an amazing community project to better St. Louis, there will also be live music, food from food trucks such as Yo Taco and amazing people.

kentucky derby party at the royale Kentucky Derby Party at The Royale: the 8th Annual Kentucky Derby Party featuring The Soulard Blues Band & Tom Hall. Derby attire required, specifically hats for women and ties for men. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

Date: Saturday, May 4th

Place: The Royale – 3132 S. Kingshighway

Time: Party starts at 2pm

derby day party in st. louis Derby Day at Three Sixty: Three Sixty is hosting a Derby Day Party along with Young Friends of St. Louis Children’s Hospital to raise money for the St. Louis Children’s Hospital. The tickets include 2 drinks from Anheuser-Busch and Four Roses Bourbon in addition to hors d’ oeuvres and mint juleps. There will be a fun betting event where you’ll have the chance to win fun prizes like a night stay at The Hilton or Cardinals tickets. Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door.

st. louis kentucky derby party 2013 5th Annual Kentucky Derby Party at Just John’s: The event includes free food, a derby attire contest with cash prizes and live music from Quitting Amy.

Time: Bar opens at 3pm

st. louis kentucky derby parties Bobby’s 9th Annual Kentucky Derby Party: A party sponsored by Alive Magazine and hosted by Bobby Horvath to raise money for Camp Hope, an organization which provides funds and awareness for disables veterans. Tickets are $25 and include Jim Beam Black Mint Juleps, tasty treats and musical entertainment from DJ Nune. In addition, there will be a Derby Hat contest.
