Can Chestnut Win His 10th Title In 2017 Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest On July 4th?

My favorite Fourth of July event each year is the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest that takes place on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. Joey Chestnut, the legendary American competitive eater, ate 70 hot dogs last year to win his ninth title. He’ll attempt to win his tenth title in 2017, but may face stiff challenges from Matt Stonie and Carmen Cincotti.

Watch the festivities on ESPN on July 4th. The Women’s contest begins at 10 AM CST and can be seen on WatchESPN. The Men’s contest begins with the introduction of the contestants at 11:30 AM CST and can be seen on ESPN2.

Can Joey Chestnut Repeat?

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut brought the Nathan’s Famous belt back to American soil in 2007 by defeating Takeru Kobayashi and eating 66 hot dogs in the allotted 12 minutes. Kobayashi had won six titles in a row and was part of a Japanese decade of dominance that included nine wins in ten years.

Chestnut would win eight titles in a row before falling last year to Matt “Megatoad” Stonie. Stonie bested Chestnut by two hot dogs last year, 62 to 60.

Jaws stormed back last year and blew away the competition by eating 70 hot dogs and buns last year for his ninth win. Megatoad was far behind with 53 HDB.

Where Is Kobayashi?

Competitive eating fans last  a enjoyed battle between Chestnut and Kobayashi in 2009.  Kobayashi was barred from competing in the 2010 contest. He showed up anyways and was arrested while wearing a “Free Kobi” shirt.

The legendary Japanese competitive eater is banned from the Fourth of July event due to a contract dispute with Major League Eating, the organization that organizes the hot dog eating contest as well as other competitive eating events.

While Kobayashi won’t be in attendance at Coney Island, he will still be somewhat present. Many of the eaters will be using a technique made famous at the 2001 contest. Then 23-years old, Kobayashi used the “Kobayashi Shake” technique that year in winning the event for the first time with 50 HDB consumed. The previous record had been 25 HDB.

Kobayashi still makes several appearances each year, but does very few eating events. He recently starred in a commercial promoting fries and Checkers and Rally’s.

Miki Sudo Looks For Fourth Women’s Title In 2017

Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas had ruled the women’s division at the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest before Miki Sudo came along in 2014. Thomas won three consecutive titles between 2011-2013 and still holds the record with the 45 she ate in 2012.

Sudo ate 38 1/2 HDB last year to win the women’s championship belt.

The Las Vegas bartender got into competitive eating less than six years ago when she conqurered the PhoZilla Challenge at Pho 87 after several friends had tried and failed.

Erik Denmark & Sophia DeVita Will Represent St. Louis At Coney Island

Erik The Red Denmark qualified for the Coney Island event by eating 28 hot dogs back in April at a Nathan’s Famous qualifying event at Busch Stadium. Sophia DeVita consumed 16 HDB to qualify for Coney Island from the women’s side.

Denmark, a 39-year old resident of Seattle, is currently ranked #14 by Major League Eating.

DeVita is currently ranked #32.

Stonie, Esper, Chestnut & Cincotti Set World Records In May

Matt Stonie, Chestnut and Carmen Cincotti, who will all compete at Coney Island, set records in various contests back in May. Cincotti ate 61.75 ears of Florida sweet corn at the 2017 National Sweet Corn Eating Championship. Chestnut ate 126 tacos at the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel World Taco Eating Championship. Stonie at 87 Æbleskiver at the  First Annual Tivoli Fest World Æbleskiver Eating Championship. An æbleskiver is traditional Danish pancake.

Geoffrey Esper also set a world record by eating 36 pepperoni rolls at a recent event. Miki Sudo finished second at the same event by consuming 30.5 rolls.

Fine Americans do not miss the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4th.
