Opening This Weekend

The Fate of the Furious

Going through the reviews of The Fate of the Furious, out this weekend and the eighth movie in the Fast And Furious franchise. Where the marketing around the last installment dealt a lot with Paul Walker’s death, this time around it’s the feud between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel. Many agree that F8 is big and over the top. They don’t agree if that “ridiculous and dumb” is in a good way or a bad way.

USA TODAY calls the film “wholly insane” and gives it three-out-of-four stars. SilverScreenBeat calls it “big, dumb fun action with a lot of heart.” Mike Scott of The Times-Picayune doesn’t really know what to think but knows that the word “dumb” can be used to describe it.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $122.7 million for The Fate of the Furious. Would topping $120 million this weekend be enough to get Dwayne Johnson his own spinoff? We’ll see.

The Lost City of Z

The Lost City of Z, in theaters this weekend, is based on the book of the same name by David Grann.  Grann’s book tells the story of the journey British explorer Percy Fawcett took into the Amazon jungle in 1925.  Fawcett was never heard from again.

Charlie Hunnam stars in the film as Fawcet,  although the character in the film isn’t much like the Fawcett in the book. In fact, the Fawcett character in the movie may be closer to how he was seen in newspaper accounts of the day. Those accounts portrayed him as some great explorer that knew the Amazon well. He was apparently not that.

Make It A Redbox Night With Collateral Beauty or Monster Trucks

Collateral Beauty, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Monster Trucks, and Lion are among the movies now availble to rent at your local Redbox.

Collateral Beauty

Will Smith, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton and Kate Winslet are among the stars of Collateral Beauty. The film made just $31 million at the domestic box office, which shouldn’t influence your decision about renting it. For some reason, critics decided to gang up on this movie while people who saw the film generally liked it.
