Opening This Weekend

Bad Santa 2

Billy Bob Thorton is back in theaters this week as Willie Soke, 13 years after Bad Santa first hit theaters. The original brought in $12.3 million on its opening weekend and $60 million during its theater run. The film has gained fans since and become somewhat or a holiday classic.

In Bad Santa 2, Thorton is still the “world’s drunkest, crookedest Kris Kringle,” as Rolling Stone referred to him in their review of the film. Tony Cox is back as Soke’s sidekick, Marcus. That’s the same Cox that played an Ewok in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. Kathy Bates also joins the cast as Willie’s mother.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $8.1 million for Bad Santa 2.

Moana

Auli’i Cravalho voices Moana, a young woman that sails on off an adventure to save her people by finding the demigod Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson.

Hawaiian actress Cravalho grew up with the Polynesian myth that the film is based on. The Daily Beast calls Moana the movie “revolutionary” and Moana the character “Disney’s most unapologetically feminist princess yet.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton creator and Tony award, wrote seven of the songs on the Moana soundtrack. His work on the film could win him an Oscar, according to people who speculate about those things.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $56.4 million for Moana.
