Saint Louis FC Hosts The Oklahoma City Energy Wednesday Night As Home Schedule Winds Down

Saint Louis FC is back at World Wide Technology Soccer Park this Wednesday to face Oklahoma City Energy FC in the club’s second-to-last home game this season. Kickoff for the Wednesday August 31st match is scheduled for 7 pm.

The USL West

The Tim Leonard era has not started out the way fans saw it in their dreams. Saint Louis FC continues to fall down the table in the USL West. The team now sits in 13th place in the 15-team conference with 29 points. There are still five games and fifteen points on the table, so we’ll hope STLFC can finish a few spots further up the table.

As we’ve seen recently with San Antonio FC, which now holds the 8th and final playoff spot with 34 points, stringing together several wins in a row can really make a difference in this conference.

Last Time Out For Saint Louis FC

Last weekend’s game against San Antonio FC was a must-win for the club in terms of the USL playoff race. Unfortunately, Saint Louis FC did not win. 5,262 fans saw the local club drop the game 2-0 to San Antonio FC.

San Antonio keeper Matt Cardone was named the USL Player of the Week today for his performance in St. Louis last weekend.

Who Is Oklahoma City Energy FC?

Oklahoma City Energy FC has a record of 10-4-10 on the season for 40 points. The club sits in fifth place in the USL West. A win in St. Louis could put the club as high as second place in the conference.

Oklahoma City has played and beat Tulsa twice in their last three games. In between, they lost to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC by a 2-0 score.

Wojciech Wojcik leads the team with 4 goals on the season to lead the team in that category. Danni Konig leadsw the team in overall scoring with three goals and four assists on the season.

Goalkeeper Cody Laurendi recorded his 12th shutout of the season last weekend. He currently leads the USL in save percentage (.825) and goals-against-average (.64)

Oklahoma City has made quite a bit of soccer news this week already. Bob Funk Jr., the co-owner of Oklahoma City Energy FC, announced plans to lead a group in purchasing a large piece of land in Oklahoma City with eyes on an MLS team and stadium.

The minority owner of Rayo OKC, the city’s NASL team, removed part of the turf at the high school where the team plays its home matches. That is just the latest bit of turmoil for that club, where apparently front office paychecks have bounced more than once. No word on if Jeff Cooper or Claude Anelka have been spotted in Oklahoma City.

What To Expect From Saint Louis FC

It’s a guarantee that STLFC will look different on the field on Wednesday night. Irvin Herrera and Ryan Thompson, both typically starters for the club, will miss the next two games on international duty.

Saint Louis FC will be without a number of players on Wednesday night, in fact. Brandon Barklage, Parker Maher and Alex Morrell will all miss the game with injuries. Sam Fink will be sitting due to yellow card accumulation. Those are in addition to the absence of Ryan Thompson and Irvin Herrera.

Vince Cicciarelli, a second half substitute in recent matches, will likely start in Herrera’s place. Cicciarelli, who played three years of college soccer at Notre Dame before playing his final year at Saint Louis University, is second on the team with five goals on the season.

Expect to see Mark Pais in goal in Thompson’s absence. Pais has played in sixteen games this season for STLFC with the last being on August 3rd against Swope Park, a 1-1 draw. The club is 4-6-6 with Pais in goal.

Patrick Doody played 17 minutes in his return to STLFC in Kansas City. He then played 45 minutes in last weekend’s game. Expect to see him on the field for perhaps the whole match on Wednesday night, especially in light of Fink’s absence.

We’re also sure to see new addition Jason Plumhoff for an extended period of time against OKC. He joined the club late last week and played 57 minutes against San Antonio.
