Recapping Last Weekend

Zootopia easily took the weekend box office crown last weekend with $51.3 million in receipts in its second weekend of release. 10 Cloverfield Lane took the second spot with $24.7 million in its debut. Deadpool earned $10.9 million in its fifth weekend of release to take the third spot.

The other three debuts for the weekend were numbers 6,7 and 8 at at the box office. The Perfect Match made $4.3 million, The Young Messiah made $3.3 and The Brothers Grimsby made $3.25 million.

Zootopia has now made more than $465 million worldwide in 12 days of release. Deadpool has made $330.8 million domestically and more than $710 million worldwide.

What I Saw This Week

I saw The Brothers Grimsby and 10 Cloverfield Lane this week and unfortunately, had mixed feelings on both.

I’m not usually a Sacha Baron Cohen guy and I guess I know exactly why. From the trailer I thought The Brothers Grimsby would be pretty good. It had a good story and a couple good scenes in the trailer. While the movie did have a few more good parts, especially the scene where Cohen inspires the soccer hooligans, the gross-out laughs were not my cup of tea and left me thinking about leaving the theater.

Much has been made about the original trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane and the splash the film made with the release of its trailer. The overall secrecy of the project was definitely well done. Havign zero clue what is going to happen in the movie is a unique feeling. I thought the film had a few really good, suspenseful parts. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the ending. Maybe a sequel will make this one seem better in hindsight. we can only hope.

Opening This Weekend

The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1

The third of four planned movies in the Divergent series is here this weekend with the release of The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1. Taking a page from The Hunger Games, the third book in Veronica Roth’s Divergent series is being split up into two movies. This film follows the events of Insurgent as Shailene Woodley’s Tris character and Theo James’s Four go outside of the walled Chicago for the first time in their lives. Miles Teller, Jeff Daniels, Naomi Watts and Mekhi Phifer are among the familiar faces returning for this film.

Reviews for this film haven’t been great. It’s probably to be expected with the third film in a franchise like this. If you liked the first Divergent films then you’ll go see this one and probably be please with it. If you go see this one and you didn’t see/like the first films, then you aren’t very smart.

Todd M. Thatcher  predicts The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1 will make $43.7 million in its opening weekend.

Miracles from Heaven

Miracles from Heaven is based on a memoir of the same name written by Christy Wilson Beam. Beam is played in the film adaptation by Jennifer Garner. Kylie Rogers plays her daughter, who is given a life-threatening diagnosis and then is magically cured after a near-death experience.

Miracles from Heaven opened yesterday in 3,047 theaters across the country and grossed $1.9 million. It actually came in second, behind Zootopia, for the day.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts Miracles from Heaven will make $15.8 million in its opening weekend.

The Bronze

The Big Bang Theory‘s Melissa Rauch stars as a former Olympic gymnast clinging to past glory in The Bronze, which she also wrote with her husband. Sebastian Stan plays a rival gymnastic coach to Rauch’s Hope Ann Greggory character. One of the most talked about aspects of the movie is a sex scene between Rauch and Stan’s characters. A Cirque du Soleil dancer is also featured as Rauch’s body double.

Silicon Valley‘s Thomas Middleditch stars as an admirer of Hope Ann Greggory and the owner of a gymnastic facility. He said he was drawn to The Bronze for its story and the people involved. Gail Pennington of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch calls the film “crude to the extreme” and gave it 2-out-of-4 stars. The San Francisco Chronicle was even harsher.

The Bronze is opening in limited release this weekend and thus an opening weekend prediction is not available.
