John Oliver On Public Defenders

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver returned from its break last night with a new episode on HBO. One of the highlights of the show was this segment of John Oliver on the public defenders system. Oliver points out how ridiculously over-worked and underpaid public defenders are. He jokes that the only people who appear in court more often than public defenders are former child stars.

The Perfect Guy Tops Weekend Box Office

The Perfect Guy won a battle of low-budget debuts this weekend, bringing in an estimated $26.7 million versus The Visit‘s $25.69 million. Perfect Guy was made for $12 million and Visit was made for just $5 million. The former opened on just 2,221 screens whereas the latter played on 3,069 screens.

War Room and its budget of $3 million finished third in its third weekend of release by taking in another $7.4 million, bringing it just shy of $40 million in total.

I’ll have more on the weekend numbers on Thursday in my Weekend Movie Guide. I’ll also take a look at the movies opening this weekend, Everest, Maze Runner: Scorch Trails and Black Mass.

St. Louis Rams Open NFL Season With Win Over Seattle Seahawks

This is how John Oliver would react to the St. Louis Rams beating the Seattle Seahawks if he didn’t have more important things to talk about.

The St. Louis Rams shocked most of St. Louis yesterday with a season-opening win at home over the Seattle Seahawks. Jeff Fisher’s team built a lead, lost said lead and then forced overtime before getting a key defensive stop to finish out a 34-31 win. Gregg Williams’s defense sacked Seahawks quarterback six times on the day and kept Marshawn Lynch to 73 yards on the ground. Trumaine Johnson also picked up an interception on the day. 22 different players had at least one tackle.

Nick Foles completed 18 of 27 passes for 297 yards an a touchdown in his regular season debut for the hometown team. He also ran for another touchdown.

Greg Zuerlein was perfect on field goals, kicking a 33-yard one in regulation and the 37-yard game-winner in overtime. He also was perfect on 4 extra points.

Following the game, Nick Wagoner of ESPN asked “Did Rams Just Land Biggest Win of Jeff Fisher Era?

Announced attendance was 51,792 at the Edward Jones Dome. That figure was the lowest of the 14 regular season NFL games played thus far in the 2015 season. The Rams will travel to Washington, D.C. next weekend to face the Washington Redskins before returning home on September 27 to face the Pittsburgh Steelers. Benjamin Hochman broke down the struggle today fans face now that the St. Louis Rams “are an impending playoff team”.

Kim Davis Returns To Work

Kim Davis returned to her county clerk job in Kentucky today, but no one is really sure what she’s doing. Kim Davis is probably looking for her next husband in her office with the blinds closed. The people who work for her, who I feel really sorry for, will be granting same-sex marriage licenses, but they won’t look like other licenses. They will say “issued pursuant to a federal court order”, according the Davis. Even Kristen Stewart feels sorry for Kim Davis.

The first gay couple received their marriage license in Rowan County, Kentucky this morning.

Adam ‘Pacman” Jones Should Be Suspended

Amari Cooper doesn’t think Adam “Pacman” Jones should be suspended for slamming Cooper’s head into his own helmet after a play yesterday. Jones apparently isn’t sorry for what he did. Not sure if he regrets the Las Vegas strip club ordeal that cost him $11 million either. Or punching a woman. This is the same guy that got suspended for the entire 2007 NFL season.

Watch for yourself. Here’s Adam “Pacman” Jones ripping the helmet off Amari Cooper’s head and slamming his head into it.

High School Cheerleaders Perform 9/11-Inspired Routine

Miss America Says Tom Brady Cheated

Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell was crowned Miss America over the weekend. Country musician Brett Eldredge was one of the hosts and asked Cantrell if she thought Tom Brady cheated. Cantrell had a bit of a rambling response, but ended it by saying that she thinks Brady cheated and should be suspended. Why was this even a question? Because these pageants have gotten ridiculous.

Ryan is a weird dude. He doesn't cook, yet owns a plethora of kitchen gadgets. He rationalized buying a SodaStream while unemployed. He counts Step Up 2: The Streets as one of his favorite movies along with Footloose, Rent, Grease and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. He loves Mizzou but only wants them in the SEC so he can tailgate in Nashville. He owns a ShakeWeight and AbLounger, but still loves him some John Donut and Billie's Fine Foods.
