National Police Week 2015

This week marks the annual celebration of the brothers and sisters in blue – National Police Week 2015. JFK signed a proclamation in 1962 that designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and whichever week it falls is Police Week. All across the country Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) gather in Washington DC to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. This year, the roll call of the fallen officers reached 273 names. I have the honor of being married to and being surrounded by some of the most amazing people who are part of this fraternal brotherhood.

I’m so proud of my husband, my LEO – it’s not easy to serve and protect the community in such a vulnerable capacity; many of the residents don’t want you there, and some would even take any opportunity they could to take your life and celebrate the very act of doing so. Yet he and many others get up every day (or every night) and put their lives out there to protect everyone, including the haters. My LEO won’t often discuss his work experiences with me, but I do know enough to tell you that he has done more in the past 5 years for his fellow man than I could ever hope to do in my entire life. He is one of the most caring, compassionate, and intelligent people I know – and I’m so glad he asked me to marry him 11 years ago – despite my countless sleepless nights and my inability to ever watch the news again (I guess I’m not really missing much anyway, right?).

Please take a moment out of your busy day to say a silent prayer or positive thought for the men and women in uniform. They sacrifice more than many of us can understand: missed holidays, birthdays, special occasions and SLEEP. And remember – they are someone’s husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter, or friend. They are people. They are selfless. They deserve the opportunity to earn our respect.

To all of the LEOs reading this – know that you are loved, cared about, and important. You matter. For every one individual that spews hate to you, there are five more behind him or her to offer you their thanks and a hug for what you do. To the specific LEOs in my life – the men that my children lovingly refer to as “uncle” – thank you for taking care of my husband. He would do anything for any of you, and I know the favor would be returned without hesitation. My children absolutely idolize you and truly think of you as real life superheroes. Please, be careful out there – we need each and every one of you here with us.
