Recapping Last Weekend

Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s receipts dropped 59.4% in its second weekend of release, but still brought in $77.7 million to lead the weekend box office. The sequel has now grossed $313.4 million domestically and will likely hit the $1 billion mark worldwide this weekend.

Hot Pursuit opened just shy of $14 million while The Age of Adaline pulled in $5.8 million. Furious 7 pulled in another $5.4 million in its sixth weekend of release. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 brought in $5.3 million and now sits at $58 million in ticket sales versus its budget of $30 million.

Ex Machina moved into 725 more theaters across the country over the weekend and increased its receipts by 53 percent to $3.5 million. Unfriended pulled in $1.5 million in its fourth weekend and has now made $31 million at the box office. The people behind the film have to be happy with that considering it only had a budget of $1 million.

Pitch Perfect 2

The Bellas are back in Pitch Perfect 2. Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson (the hot one), Brittany Snow, Adam DeVine and most of the rest of the aca-awesome cast return in the sequel to the 2012 hit. Hailee Steinfeld of True Grit fame also joins the cast. Pitch Perfect made $65 million domestically and $113 million worldwide at the box office on a budget of $17 million. Reviews of Pitch Perfect 2 have been mixed with some questioning the decision of having Elizabeth Banks direct. Writing in Forbes, Scott Mendelson says the sequel “out-sings, outshines its predecessor“.

Pitch Perfect 2 officially opens tomorrow, but you can catch it tonight at select theaters around the St. Louis area. The fabulous AMC Esquire 7 and several other theaters have showings tonight beginning at 7 pm. The film opens tomorrow at MX Movies in downtown St. Louis.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Glowing reviews of Mad Max:Fury Road, like this one from Wired, are rolling in. Tom Hardy takes the Max Rockatansky torch from Mel Gibson in this reboot that also features Charlize Theron, Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult.

Screen Rant thinks Mad Max: Fury Road will pull in about $40 million this weekend at the box office while Pitch Perfect 2 will top the charts with $49 million. They note that the Mad Max advertising campaign has touted the beauty of the film and the need for audiences to see it on the big screen.
