The Gambler, The Interview, Into The Woods and Unbroken all open in movie theaters on Christmas Day

Recapping Last Weekend

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies crushed the competition in its opening weekend with $54.7 million in receipts over the three-day weekend period. It brought in $24.5 million on its opening day last Wednesday and another $10 million on Thursday before hitting the weekend. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb brought in $17.1 million in its opening weekend for second place and Annie came in third with $15.9 million. Exodus: Gods and Kings brought in $8.1 million in its second weekend. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -Part 1 rounded out the top five.

Predicting This Weekend

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug ruled Christmas 2013 with $9.3 million in receipts to The Wolf of Wall Street‘s $9.15 million. Hobbit 2 also barely took the following weekend with $29 million total in receipts. Frozen had been released a month earlier, but saw a huge push on the weekend after Christmas that saw it bring in $28.6 million.

ScreenRant is predicting a box office win for Into The Woods this weekend to the tune of about $40 million in receipts. They predict the third installment of Hobbit will take the second spot and Unbroken will come in third with $19 million. ComingSoon.net does not think Into The Woods or any of the other films will be able to overtake Hobbit.

Sony unveiled their plans on Tuesday to allow screenings of The Interview in select theaters across the country. It’s very hard to say how the box office will be for those showings.

Opening This Weekend

The Interview

Well, we thought it wasn’t going to be showing on Christmas Day, but it looks like it now will be. MX Movies in downtown St. Louis confirmed Tuesday via a tweet that they will in fact be showing the controversial comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco. The film will however not begin showings until Friday, January 2. The comes after rumors started spreading on Monday about a Christmas Day showing and theaters across the country started confirming on social media that they would be hosting screenings. It’s getting hard to follow this controversy. North Korea was upset that Sony made a movie about people assassinating their leader, who they put on a pedestal higher than any other pedestal. Sony then got hacked in a massive way. North Korea says they aren’t behind it, but the FBI seems to think they are. All of the computers in North Korea connected to the internet, which amount to about five, lose their internet connection. North Korea now blames the United States government for being behind the movie and vows more attacks. The people of North Korea want you to see this movie. Their lives suck because their government sucks. The difference is we can laugh at their government whereas most of them are stuck living there.

Update: The Interview will become available later today on YouTube and Google Play as well as the XBox streaming system. It will be $5.99 to rent and stream and $14.99 to buy.

Unbroken

Angelina Jolie directed and produced this story  onLouis Zamperini’s life. Zamperini competed in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin for the United States in the 5,000-meter race. The film is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s book of the same name. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and went down in the Pacific ocean in May of 1943. Louis and two other survivors spent over a month in a raft drifting in the ocean. One of the crash survivors died at sea while Louis and another were picked up by Japanese sailors. Angelina Jolie and Zamperini, who died earlier this year, were said to be close friends in the later years of his life. While a lot of people on Rotten Tomatoes want to see this movie, critics aren’t giving out great reviews. If you’re going to see this movie, you’ll also want to pick up a copy of the book to read the rest of Zamperini’s life story.

Into The Woods

Rob Marshall based this film on the Broadway hit of the same name created by Stephen Sondheim. Stars include Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp and Chris Pine. The screenplay, like the Broadway musical, is based on a collection of stories from the Grimm fairy tales.

The Gambler

Mark Wahlberg, Jessica Lange and John Goodman star in this Rupert Wyatt film. Brie Larson also appears as Wahlberg’s love interest. This Gambler is a remake of the 1974 film of the same name.
