There aren’t any blockbuster movies opening this Thanksgiving weekend, but there are several movies that certainly look worth seeing. A Disney animated film opens as does a Spike Lee film. A slew of stars are in two other films; one a musical and one a crime thriller. One film opens in limited release in the St. Louis area but is expected to be a massive hit in India. Check out Frozen, Homefront, Black Nativity, Oldboy and Bullett Raja in the Weekend Movie Guide.

As expected, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opened to massive numbers this past weekend. Its $158 million opening weekend narrowly missed the $160.9 2-D-only mark held by The Dark Knight Rises. Hunger Games currently sits at $186 million from the domestic box office and $333 million worldwide after five days of release. The original grossed $691 million in 168 days of theater release. Thor: The Dark World finished second over the weekend with $14 million in ticket sales and The Best Man Holiday again topped the $10 million mark with just over $12 million. Delivery Man, starring Vince Vaughn, was a distant fourth with $8 million in its opening weekend. Free Birds rounded out the top five with $5.3 million. The box office’s overall take of $226 million was the highest since July 5-7; when the $83 million opening of Despicable Me 2 drove a $230 million box.

Opening This Week

Frozen

Jennifer Lee, who co-wrote Wreck-It Ralph, also co-wrote this animated telling of a classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale.  It’s getting great reviews and there’s a funny snowman. Sounds like a winner.

Oldboy

Spike Lee directs remake of a South Korean cult classic. It follows Josh Brolin as he attempts to find out why his character was kidnapped and imprisoned for 20 years. Samuel L. Jackson and Elizabeth Olsen also star. Word is it is very violent and dark. There also rumors of a version that is substantially larger and better. Look for that to be in the dvd version.

Warning: Even the trailer is a bit much

Black Nativity

Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett and Jennifer Hudson all appear in this Christmas flick. Mary J. Blige also appears as an angel.

Homefront

Slyvester Stallone actually wrote the screenplay for this fil that’s based on a novel by Chuck Logan. Jason Statham plays a former DEA agent that moves his family to what he thought was a quiet town and then immediately finds trouble. James Franco and Winona Ryder also star. Fittingly, the trouble apparently starts when Statham’s daughter kicks the crap out of a playground bully.

Bullett Raja

This Bollywood action film is getting a ton of buzz in India. It will only play at one theater in the St. Louis area, AMC Chesterfield 14.

Still Playing

Dallas Buyer’s Club

Matthew McConaughey has been getting great reviews for his role in this indie film. It’s recently been getting some backlash from here and here. Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto also star. The film is currently only playing in two places around town.

Ryan is a weird dude. He doesn't cook, yet owns a plethora of kitchen gadgets. He rationalized buying a SodaStream while unemployed. He counts Step Up 2: The Streets as one of his favorite movies along with Footloose, Rent, Grease and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. He loves Mizzou but only wants them in the SEC so he can tailgate in Nashville. He owns a ShakeWeight and AbLounger, but still loves him some John Donut and Billie's Fine Foods. You can get more of Ryan at iLoveSoulard.com or just check the stool on the far end of the bar at iTap in Soulard.
