Spooktacular Frights!

You could say I’m a haunted house connoisseur.  Even though I am absolutely terrified of them and the second I hear that chainsaw turn on, I will trample anyone blocking my path to the door that leads to getting the heck out of there, I sprint through half of it with my eyes closed, and I sweat more than if I had just run a 5K…in the end, it creates a rush that keeps me coming back every year.

The Darkness in Soulard has certainly given me my fair share of scares over the years. I love the scary Beetlejuice looking guy that hangs out outside while people are waiting in line and talks crazy, and I love the ambiance once you get inside while you’re still waiting in line. They really try to keep you entertained the whole time.  Admission: Adult $20, Children $15.  However, last October I experienced a new Haunted House which has taken first place (in my eyes) and it’s called CreepyWorld.

CreepyWorld in Fenton isn’t a building, it’s an entire field that has been set up to house 7 different haunts in one (new this year are SAW 3D and the Cornmaze). There’s a hayride, which if you haven’t been I won’t give away the surprise, but it was definitely the most terrified I have ever been, and that includes the time that I had to slide down into a sea of scary clowns with no way out. There are at least 3 chainsaws that I can remember (I think I may have blacked out at some point). Seriously though, Creepyworld is packed with non-stop excitement and very cool visual effects. You really can’t beat it.  Admission: Adult $23, Children $17.

There is one more haunted house that I recommend checking out this year and that is The Lemp Mansion in downtown St. Louis.  It used to be just a house with a legend of being haunted but last year they turned it into my kind of haunted house. While it didn’t get rave reviews from critics (I never agree with critics anyway), they did renovations and expansions and are now saying it’s rated the 2nd scariest haunted house in America so I’m giving it a shot.  Admission: Adult $20, Children $15.

So for my recommendations: If you’re into serious scares, head to CreepyWorld in Fenton. If you’re willing to take a chance on a cool new haunt that may be well worth the trip, head to the Lemp Mansion downtown. And if you’re new to the haunted house scene, and would like to be able to enjoy the scenery but still indulge in a little fright, check out the Darkness in Soulard.

Even better, you can purchase a Triple Combo Pack for $50 at Scarefest.com and check out all three!
