Recapping Last Weekend

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continued its reign atop the box office in 2018, taking the weekend box office crown for the second weekend in a row last weekend. The film has brought in $28.1 million in its fourth weekend of release and will likely be closing in on the $300 million mark domestically by Saturday morning.

While Jumanji‘s domestic receipts have been somewhat surprising, they only make up less the half of its worldwide take. In foreign markets, Welcome to the Jungle has brought in more than $385 million since its release.

The Commuter was the top new release over the weekend, bringing in $13.7 million and besting the $11 million opening of Paddington 2.

Proud Mary fell just short of the $10 million mark with $9.96 million worth of ticket sales over the weekend.

Opening This Weekend

Den of Thieves

Gerard Butler, Jordan Bridges and Pablo Schreiber star in Den of Thieves, in theaters this weekend.

If you’re going to see this heist film this weekend, which Roger Ebert gave 3-out-of-5 stars, there’s one thing you need to know. It’s two hours and twenty minutes long.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $6.1 million for Den of Thieves.

12 Strong

Chris Hemsworth, Michael Shannon and Michael Peña star in 12 Strong, the latest film from producer Jerry Bruckheimer.  It’s in theaters this weekend.

The film is based on the book Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton. The film and book tell the story of the Special Forces soldiers sent to Afghanistan right after 9/11 to fight the Taliban.

Todd M. Thatcher is predicting an opening weekend of $13.9 million for 12 Strong.

Forever My Girl

Forever My Girl, opening in theaters this weekend, could be a sequel to 1992’s Pure Country. Or it could at least exist in the same universe. Or I could just be reaching by a whole lot because I love Pure Country.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Heidi McLaughlin. The book is part of the 7-book Beaumont Series from the author.

If you love your Nicholas Sparks books and films, you’ll enjoy this one.

Alex Roe is Liam Page, an aspiring country singer who leaves his high school sweetheart at the altar as his first single is climbing the charts. The story then skips to almost a decade later when a now-very successful  Liam returns to his hometown.

High school sweetheart Josie (played by Jessica Rothe) is now the mother of 7-year old Billy, Liam’s daughter he was never made aware of.

Katie Walsh of TribLive says Forever My Girl  “fluffy, escapist sweet spot.”

See I, Tonya or Lady Bird at Hi-Pointe Theatre This Weekend

Hi-Pointe Theatre is a hidden gem of St. Louis. The Hi-Pointe Backlot is even more so, hidden behind the main theater on McCausland Avenue. Hi-Pointe has been around since 1922 at the Southwest corner of Forest Park and below the world’s largest Amoco sign.

Hi-Pointe Backlot came on the scene in 2015 on the second floor of a building right behind the main theater. It took three years of rehab before the owners of Hi-Pointe spent 60 straight days putting the final touches on the space. The 48-seat theater has drawn stellar reviews from movie fans.

See Lady Bird this weekend at Hi-Pointe Backlot, while I, Tonya plays at Hi-Pointe Theatre.

Make It A Redbox Night With Home Again

Happy Death Day and The Snowman are among the movies now available to rent at your local Redbox machine.

I saw Happy Death Day randomly one day at the movie theater when I missed my MoviePass check-in time for another movie.

I wasn’t expecting to like it or even really stay through the whole movie. I ended up really enjoying the movie and it wasn’t the movie I expected at all going in.

Go rent Happy Death Day if you’re looking for something to watch.
