Thousands of Americans that served with the California National Guard are being forced to pay back their enlistment bonuses, putting many in dire financial straits. The bonuses were paid a decade ago when the need for soldiers was at an all-time high. Much like how unrealistic targets led to the Wells Fargo scandal recently, enlistment targets were also what led to the fraud and corruption in this case. Soldiers that served multiple combat tours are being forced to pay back bonuses of $15,000 or more as well as interest. Failure to pay can lead to wage garnishments.
