10 Cloverfield Lane, The Brothers Grimsby, The Perfect Match and The Young Messiah open in movie theaters around St. Louis this weekend. Ride Along 2, How To Be Single  and Brooklyn begin showing  at Keller 8, while The 33, Black Mass and Spectre are among the movies now available to rent at Redbox.

Recapping Last Weekend

Zootopia debuted to more than $75 million over the weekend to easily top the weekend box office. Fellow debut film London Has Fallen came in in second place with a distant $21.6 million. Deadpool rounded out the top three with $16.7 million.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot earned $7.4 million in its debut while The Other Side of the Door earned $1.2 million.

What I Saw This Week

I went to see Eddie the Eagle last weekend at the Regal O’Fallon Stadium 14 (formerly Great Escape) theater. I found the movie to be pretty decent overall. It could have been better. Hugh Jackman was just okay in my opinion. I thought Taron Edgerton was excellent though as Eddie Edwards. Read up on Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards. The real story is quite amazing, even compared to the movie’s story.

London Has Fallen was fairly ridiculous as expected. It has the big explosions like you would expect and a few good one-liners. White House Down was still a better movie and should have had a sequel.

I rented Room from Redbox, which came out last weekend. Since it was an Oscar contender, I wasn’t expecting to really like it all that much. I actually really enjoyed. I would have been okay with it winning the Best Picture over Spotlight. Brie Larson deserved all of her awards for her role. If I had to pick between Leonardo DiCaprio and Room‘s Jacob Tremblay for the Best Actor award, I would have given it to the kid born in 2006.

I would say the same thing if I hadn’t seen how adorable he is with his parents. By the way, they aren’t in the business. Dad is a police detective and Mom is a homemaker.

10 Cloverfield Lane

10 Cloverfield Lane has been shrouded in mystery since the very beginning. The stars of the movie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr. and John  Goodman, thought they were filming a movie called Valencia. Winstead told Mashable that she didn’t know about the Cloverfield connection and the actual title of the movie until a couple hours before the original trailer came out. Rolling Stone talked to producer J.J. Abrams went about making  “secret sequel” and then surprising audiences with it.

The Brothers Grimsby

The new movie from Sacha Baron Cohen, The Brothers Grimsby, is bound to offend some people and entertain others. The New Republic calls it an “action-comedy for idiots.” Lindsey Bahr calls it “truly shameless.” Brett Arnold at Maxim says the film made him laugh even if he didn’t much care for it.

The Perfect Match

There isn’t much buzz out there about The Perfect Match, but there are stories and pictures from the film’s premiere. The stars of the film, Terrence Jenkins, Cassie Ventura, Queen Latifah and Paula Patton, were of course there, but so were Jennifer Lopez and Sean “Diddy” Combs. Lopez is dating Casper Smart, who also appears in the film and previously was a backup dancer for Lopez. Combs is dating Ventura. Bother Smart and Ventura have connections to the Step Up franchise. Smart appeared in the third installment while Ventura appeared in the second. Lopez and Combs dated back in the late ’90s.

The Young Messiah

The Young Messiah attempts to tell the story of Jesus Christ the child. The film is based on Anne Rice’s Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. Charisma says that the film will raise questions among those familiar with Jesus Christ and those not.

Sharknado 4 Cast Announced

The cast for the upcoming Sharknado 4 from SyFy was announced this week. David Hasselhoff is set to return and he’ll be joined by the likes of Gary Busey, Cheryl Tiegs, Cody Linely and Tommy Davidson, to name a few. The movie is expected to premiere in July.

New Brie Larsen Film Picked Up By A24

Fresh off accolades and awards for her role in Room, Brie Larson has had another film of hers picked up by A24. The thriller Free Fire has been picked up by the studio. It was produced by Martin Scorsese and also stars Armie Hammer and Cillian Murphy.

Netflix May Nab Bright, Starring Will Smith & Taron Edgerton

It’s being reported by Variety that Netflix may be acquiring the rights to the film Bright, starring Will Smith and Taron Edgerton and being directed by David Ayer.

God’s Not Dead 2 Trailer

Melissa Joan Hart and David A.R. White star in the sequel God’s Not Dead 2. The original God’s Not Dead made just shy of $61 million at the domestic box office against a budget of just $2 million. The film is set to premiere in theaters on April 1, 2016.
