Slu's Austin McBroom helps St. Louis Homeless man

Saint Louis University sophomore Austin McBroom played in all 34 games this past season for coach Jim Crews and his Billikens Men’s Basketball team. He was the most productive player off the bench, averaging 7.3 points per game. With the departure of the winningest Senior class in school history, McBroom will be looked upon to lead the Billikens next season on the court. Video of something McBroom and friend Blake Carelli did recently shows that Austin definitely has the character you want to see in the leader of your team.

The pair recently set out to make a difference in one person’s life. The video will definitely make a difference in the lives of others as well. The pair picked up Michael, a gentleman down on his luck living on the streets of Downtown St. Louis. First, they took him out for a meal at Kentucky Fried Chicken. It was the first real meal Michael said he had had in “4 or 5 days”. They then took him to a local barber shop where he got his head and beard shaved. It was the first haircut he had had in 4 or 5 years.

Their next destination was a local mall where they took Michael to H&M and bought him some new clothes.

At the end of the day Austin and Blake dropped Michael off back where they picked him up at his request. He would wait there until he could get into the shelter at 9 pm.

While this isn’t necessarily the way everyone should go about helping others in need, it is definitely an inspiring act of kindness.

Here’s video of the day uploaded to YouTube by Carelli. Credit to KSDK, which first reported this story.

McBroom transferred to SLU from Central Michigan in 2012 to play for the late Rick Majerus. He sat out the 2012-2013 season under NCAA regulations and played his first season for the Billikens this past season.
