Last weekend saw the opening of Thor: The Dark World and the biggest box office numbers since mid-July. This weekend will not come close to those numbers. The Best Man Holiday is the only film opening nationally in wide release. It follows the group from 1999’s The Best Man as they reunite for the holidays.
Last weekend’s overall box office gross of $167 million was the largest since The Wolverine topped the charts during the last weekend of July. Thor: The Dark World came out strong with an $86 million take in its opening weekend. At the foreign box office it has raked in $241 million in two weeks. The first Thor brought in a TOTAL of $268 million overseas. Thor topped $101 million within its first five days of domestic release. Bad Grandpa, Ender’s Game, Free Birds and Last Vegas rounded out the top five over the weekend with combined sales of $44 million.
The Best Man Holiday
Much of the cast of The Best Man returns in this sequel. Taye Diggs, Monica Calhoun and Morris Chestnut are among the friends that reunite after 15 years over the holidays. E! enjoyed the holiday cheer and said it should be a “stocking stuffer for years to come”.
About Time
Richard Curtis wrote and directed this love story about a man that decides to get a girlfriend…after he figures out he can time-travel. Curtis also wrote Bridget Jones’s Diary, Notting Hill and Love Actually. About Time opened in 175 theaters at the start of this month and last weekend expanded to 1,200 theaters. It went from grossing just over $1 million in its opening weekend to almost $5 million last weekend. Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson play the leads. Check out the trailer. Prisoners
The Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal thriller makes its way to “the land of misfit movies” this weekend after grossing $122 million worldwide in 8 weeks of release. Prisoners opened in September to the tune of $20 million on 3,260 screens. The $6,386 per screen average had dropped to just a $796 average on 225 screens by last weekend. It should be well worth the $3 ticket if you just really want to get out of the house and see a movie.
