Megan McClure Of Webster Groves Has ESPN SportsCenter #1 Top Play

Megan McClure Scored From 51 Yards Out To Give Webster Groves District Championship

Megan McClure had decent game yesterday against Rockwood Summit in the Class 3 District 3 final. The Webster Groves senior goalkeeper picked up the clean sheet in the 1-0 win and scored the game’s lone goal.

McClure’s goal came on a free kick from just inside midfield. Her attempt traveled an estimated 51 yards in the air before finding the back of the Rockwood Summit net. The Summit keeper leaped but couldn’t stop the long-range attempt.

McClure’s goal wound up being the deciding notch in the contest, giving Webster Groves the District Championship. The goal was also the #1 play on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays of the Night for May 18, 2017.

McClure has been one of the top goalkeepers in the area this season for the Statesmen, compiling a record of 18-1 for Webster Groves during the season with 13 solo clean sheets. Rockwood Summit had several chances to score during yesterday’s contest, but couldn’t solve McClure. Summit’s Mackenzie Litzsinger was one of the top goal scorers in the area during the regular season with 26 goals.

Webster Groves coach Thom Champion told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that McClure had been asking to take free kicks all season. He finally gave her a chance to show him what she could do on Tuesday during practice.

McClure plays her club soccer for St. Louis Scott Gallagher under coach Ralph Richards. She’ll continue her soccer career next season at Arkansas State.

Webster Groves will host Visitation next Tuesday in the sectional road of the MSHSAA Class 3 Girls Soccer State Tournament.
