What To Stream: Superstore

Wondering what to stream on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime this weekend? I suggest trying the new comedy from NBC, Superstore, on Hulu.

NBC’s latest sitcom comedy, Superstore, is set at a department store called Cloud 9 that is most definitely supposed to be the kind of  place owned by that awful man, Stan Kroenke. The store is located in St. Louis, although through seven episodes I’ve only heard St. Louis mentioned once and some surrounding municipalities mentioned another time.

Cast

America Ferrera stars as Amy, a floor supervisor at Cloud 9, who may or may not have a crush on the new employee, Jonah (Ben Feldman). Ferrera previously starred as the lead character in ABC’s Ugly Betty. She also voices the character of Astrid in the How To Train Your Dragon franchise.

Feldman appeared in the movie Cloverfield and appeared in 30 or shows each of Drop Dead Diva and Mad Men.

Second City alumnus Lauren Ash plays Dina, Cloud 9’s assistant store manager and security force. You may (or may not) remember her as the police officer on horseback that Kevin James attempts to flirt with at the end of Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Nico Santos, who plays Cloud 9 associate Mateo, was also in that film.

Colton Dunn, formerly a writer on The Arsenio Hall Show and Key and Peele, plays a store associate confined to a wheelchair. Former model Nichole Bloom plays pregnant associate Cheyenne while Mark McKinney plays store manager Glenn. Comedy veteran McKinney was a key piece of The Kids in the Hall and was a Saturday Night Live cast member from 1987-1997.

Reception

Superstore premiered its first two episodes on Monday, November 30, 2015 immediately following The Voice on NBC. With the strong lead-in, the debut episode was watched by 7.2 million viewers. The third episode of the show didn’t air until a month later in the 8 pm central spot on Monday night and thus saw a drastic drop in viewership.

The fourth episode saw a move to the 7 pm slot on Monday nights, which the show has been at since. Around five million viewers watch the show each week. The show is likely to get a second season and possibly even become a building block show for NBC.

As of this writing, there are eight episodes available to watch on Hulu, each twenty-two minutes long.
