Weekend Movie Guide: Interstellar, Big Hero 6

This weekend sees “one of the year’s most enticing box office showdowns” in Interstellar from Christopher Nolan against Disney’s Big Hero 6. The Best of Me makes its way to the second-run theaters, including Keller 8 Cinema in South County. Edge of Tomorrow, Maleficent, Hercules and A Million Ways To Die In The West are all now available to rent at your local Redbox.

Recapping Last Weekend

The past weekend was a relatively slow one with the 105 movies in theaters combining for $94.9 million in sales. Ouija again took the overall spot, although its $10.7 million second weekend was a 46 percent drop from its debut weekend. The horror flick has grossed $44 million worldwide in two weekend on a $5 million budget. Nightcrawler debuted to the tune of $10.4 million, which put it right in line with estimates. Fury was added in 140 theaters, but saw a 34 percent drop in its receipts. It’s $8.8 million take was still good enough for third place. Gone Girl, in its fifth weekend of release, picked up another $8.5 million to take its worldwide take to $280 million. The Book of Life brought in $8.2 million to finish fifth overall for the weekend.

John Wick fell 44.5 percent in its second weekend to just shy of $8 million. Before I Go To Sleep, starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman, had a dismal opening weekend with just $1.8 million.

Opening This Weekend

Interstellar

People are quite excited for this “epic space opera” from Christopher Nolan. Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Mackenzie Foy star in this blockbuster. By all accounts, like this one from St. Louis Magazine, this appears to be an epic film. Interstellar,  with its big cast of stars that also includes John Lithgow , Casey Affleck and Topher Grace; and its 2-hour-49-minute running time, will open in 760 IMAX theaters this weekend. That’s the largest IMAX debut ever for a movie and will boost overall receipts.

See Interstellar tomorrow night at MX Movies in downtown St. Louis.

Box Office Projection: $76 Million

Big Hero 6

Here are six reasons to go see this movie. Gizmodo has a list of eight real-life robots that inspired the robots in Big Hero 6. Wired has five comics you need to read to prep for Big Hero 6.
