In just a few weeks I will be headed down to Texas for the 2012 Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred on August 25th. It is one of the oldest and longest cycling events in the nation.
If you have ever been to northern Texas you know it is hot and dry. The Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred definitely lives up to it’s name. Those that ride the 100 miles know that the only way to endure such a challenge is to get up early to start the race at 7am in order to beat the heat.
This cycling race is so huge that it takes over 4,000 volunteers just to keep things going. My favorite aspect is that it is a family event with a Finish Line Village that has live music, food, drinks and consumer show. It also comes complete with shorter rides for those not interested in torturing themselves with 100 miles and a mountain bike race the day before.
St. Louis has so many great cycling events such as The Tour De Grove and World Naked Bike Ride (to name just a few), but this is a great experience if you are an avid cyclist and love to travel to new places. Wichita Falls is a great town to visit and the community members truly support this race, making it a really fun event. Plus, with CycloCross St. Louis coming up September 26th, it would be good practice.
It’s not too late to register. Can you handle the heat?
