$2 Burger Night At Square One

Deciding what to have for dinner on Tuesday nights is usually one of the toughest decisions of my week. Tough life, right? Do I go to Llywelyn’s in Soulard for $5 Flatbreads or Square One Brewery and Distillery in Lafayette Square for $2 Burger Night? I would imagine it’s dilemmas like this that keep world leaders up at night. I mean both of those deals are good enough to bring the 99% indoors for a little while at least.

This week, I decided to go with Square One. Two things won this one for the local brewery and distillery: 1) I hadn’t been there in awhile and 2) while Llywelyn’s has some delicious beers on tap, Square One has their own beers you won’t find anywhere else.

I was out shoe shopping that night so I stopped on the way back and saddled up at the bar with my trusty book from the public library.

Side note: I just may do a whole post on shopping for men’s shoes titled: “What clown decided square toed dress shoes should be the standard?” Then, I could use the line “hopefully it wasn’t Pogo because that dude was scary.”

A chalkboard on the back wall displays the beers on tap.  I went with the “Oh Honey” beer. I don’t have the street cred of an StlHops-er so I won’t try. I liked it.

On to the meat of this post. Or should I say double-meat? The $2 burger deal works as follows. You get a door knocker looking card and you pick what you want.  Simple right? Simple like a rubix cube. That’s not even counting if you want your burger patty made out of plants and twigs (Veggie) or Game, which I assume means whatever they brought back from a safari.

The toppings are individually priced and range from a quarter for sauce to $1.50 for ham.  I decided to go with ham, cheddar, a fried egg and barbecue sauce.  I was a little concerned that I shouldn’t have gone with the sauce after I ordered, but then I bit into my creation and it was pretty much epic. One thing I’ll need to keep in mind though is that the cheddar is shredded not sliced. Next time, I would probably go with a slice of provolone instead…but that’s just me.

The fun doesn’t stop after you eat your burger. When you create your burger, you give it a name and the chef will select the best creation of the night. The winner will get a free burger the next week and have their burger featured on the menu for the week. You’ll know if mine wins because it’s named after a certain downtown apartment building.

I topped the meal off with Square One’s Spiced Pumpkin Ale. It’s getting close to the end for these beers so I had to try it while I still can.

Your $2 Burger Night tab may end up being over $10 like mine was, but it’s a deal that’s well worth the trip.
