Attendees will be shuttled in from surrounding lots. Those arrangements will be announced at a future date. Fair St. Louis will run July 3-5 this year. California Chrome gets green light to wear nasal strip at Belmont Stakes

California Chrome has won two-thirds of the elusive Triple Crown after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Reports surfaced late yesterday that the horse’s owners may pull the horse from the Belmont field if he wasn’t allowed to wear the strip. Chrome has worn a strip in each of his last six races, all wins. It was just something one of his co-owners wanted to try. Today, the three stewards at Belmont Park voted unanimously to allow the strips on all horses. They cited studies that the strips do not allow a horse to run faster, but may help some negative side effects.

California Chrome is the 13th horse since 1978 to win the first two races of the series. Affirmed was the last horse to also win at Belmont and take home the Triple Crown. 11 horses have won the Triple Crown dating back to 1919, including 4 in the 1940s and 3 in the 1970s. Affirmed was put to sleep in 2001. After his highly-successful racing career, the horse had was a highly-successful stud.
