Lee Child Will Speak At St. Louis County Library Headquarters On November 10

Best-selling author Lee Child will be in St. Louis early next month to speak at the St. Louis County Library headquarters in Frontenac.

Child is the author of the best-selling series of novels featuring main character Jack Reacher. The character has been featured in two major motion pictures starring Tom Cruise as the veteran of the U.S. Army’s military police.

The author will speak at 7 pm on Friday November 10, 2017 in the Main Reading Room at the St. Louis County Library Headquarters at 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd.

General admission tickets are available in advance through Brown Paper Tickets or in-person at Library Headquarters. An individual ticket package can be had for $32 or a package of two tickets can be purchased for $38. Each package included one signed copy of Child’s latest book, The Midnight Line.

The November event will feature Child giving an onstage interview conducted by Reed Farrel Coleman, himself an accomplished crime fiction writer. There will not be a book signing event following the interview. Instead, books purchased with tickets for the event will be pre-signed.

The author who created the distinctly American Jack Reacher is known to readers as Lee Child. In reality, Child is actually Jim Grant, who was born and grew up in England. Grant was a disgruntled television employee across the pond for almost 20 years before writing his first Reacher novel, Killing Floor.

Grant recounted to Bryan Curtis of Grantland back in 2012 how turmoil at Granada Television, and in particular his hatred for his boss, led to the birth of Reacher.

“I’d have these horrendous meetings and want to break the guy’s leg,” Child says. “But obviously you can’t break the guy’s leg. So how would you have it done? Where could you find the kind of people to do it for you? How would you pay them? How would you pay them in an untraceable way?

“You’re working out all this narrative,” Child says, “and it’s great training.”

Lee Child the author has come a long way since writing that first Reacher book by hand at his kitchen table. The Midnight Line, the 22nd Reacher book, will be released on November 7. Combined, books featuring Jack Reacher have sold more than 100 million copies.

Child himself even appeared on screen in both films.

The two Jack Reacher movies starring Tom Cruise combined to earn more than $380 million worldwide. A third Reacher movie does not appear to be in the cards, however. Would the movies have seen more success if Dwayne Johnson had been chosen for the role instead? That’s something we will probably never know.

But maybe someone will ask Child what he thinks on November 10?
