Reputation is out November 10. It will be her sixth studio album.
Who Is “Gorgeous” About?
Swift’s fans, known as “Swifties”, are already speculating that the new single is about Swift’s current boyfriend, Joe Alwyn.
Alwyn is a 26-year old British actor who was most recently seen in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk where he portrayed lead character Billy Lynn. Alwyn can also be seen in upcoming roles alongside Gerard Butler in Keepers and Emma Stone in The Favourite.
Alwyn and the 27-year old Swift have reportedly known each other for several years and it was reported back in June that the pair had been dating for several months at that point. It was also speculated that Swift’s last release, “Ready For It,” may have contained references to Alwyn as well.
While there has been speculation that “Gorgeous” could be about former boyfriend Tom Hiddleston, a Swift fan posted on Tumblr that confirmed that the song is about Alwyn at a secret listening party for fans.
Is “Gorgeous” A Parody Of A Taylor Swift Song?
Billboard’s Richard He writes that this latest release “could pass for a parody of a Taylor Swift song” for the way it looks at the singer’s love life.
Considering Reputation climbed a pile of old Taylors in the music video for “Look What You Made Me Do,” there seems to be a bit of a theme with the album.
Whatever the larger play behind Reputation is, Frank Guan over at Vulture does not appear to be much of a fan.
“It’s absurd and not a little frightening to witness Swift, who debuted more than a decade ago as a teenager with the craft and emotional intelligence of someone twice her age, regress at 27 into a Blade Runner replicant whose feelings glitch out in the process of their own expression. It’s not that she’s run out of stories to tell.”
Spencer Kornhaber, writing for The Atlantic, seems to listen to the song with a bit more of an open mind.
“The song is very catchy and refreshingly straightforward.”
