Recapping Last Weekend

Kingsman: The Golden Circle brought in more than $39 million in its opening weekend to take the weekend box office crown last weekend.

It held on to the second spot in its second weekend of release, earning just shy of $30 million. The film with a budget estimated at $32 million will likely top the $500 million mark worldwide by the middle of the its third weekend of release.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie debuted in third place to the tune of $20.4 million.

Friend Request averaged just $778 per screen in its debut and barely managed to top $2 million in total receipts.

Opening This Weekend

American Made

Tom Cruise stars in American Made, opening in movie theaters across the country this weekend.

American Made is based on a true story in that Barry Seal was a pilot for TWA and a drug smuggler that eventually got caught. The rest of the movie “fabricates history to attack Ronald Reagan” according to Kyle Smith of the National Review.  In other words, the story may be as fake as Tom Cruise’s on-screen butt.

By the team Seal was caught in 1983 he estimated he had flown $5 billion into the United States for the Medellin Cartel, whose leadership included Pablo Escobar. Seal was able to avoid jailtime by becoming an informant for the government.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $16.5 million for American Made this weekend.

Battle of the Sexes

Emma Stone and Steve Carell star in Battle of the Sexes, opening wide in movie theaters across the country this weekend, which is based on the iconic tennis match in 1973 between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Stone and Carell star as King and Riggs, respectively.

Stone trained with Jason Walsh of Rise Nation to add 15 pounds of muscle in preparation for portraying the tennis great. At one point, Walsh shared a photo of Stone curled in the fetal position after a tough deadlifting session.

Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune is among the writers saying the film from Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris really captures the importance of the 1973 match, although it admittingly does takes some liberties with the actual events.

Battle of the Sexes officially opened last weekend, but will be expanding nationwide this weekend. Todd M. Thatcher predicts receipts of $5.2 million for the film this weekend.
