Recapping Last Weekend

The Dark Tower took the weekend box office crown last weekend with the $19.2 million debut. It narrowly beat out the $17.1 million third weekend of Dunkirk, which has now topped $133 million at the domestic box office since its release.

The film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConauhey fell short of expectations at the box office. In last week’s Weekend Movie Guide, we shared Todd M. Thatcher’s prediction of a $25.4 million opening weekend for Dark Tower.

Detroit brought in $7 million during its first weekend in wide release.

Kidnap, starring Halle Berry, brought in $10 million during its low-press release weekend.

A pair of superhero movies are closing in on milestones. Spider-Man: Homecoming brought in $8.8 million in its fifth weekend of release and will cross the $300 million mark if it can bring in north of $5 million in its sixth.  Wonder Woman will pass the $400 million mark before you read this.

Opening This Weekend

The Glass Castle

The film adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ 2005 memoir, The Glass Castle, opens in theaters this weekend. The book spent seven years on The New York Times bestseller list. The film stars Woody Harrelson, Brie Larson and Naomi Watts.

Salon calls this film from director Daniel Destin Cretton a “sincere beauty.” A.V. Club points out that Walls praised the work of Cretton and Larson, but their review points out that the book is a lot grittier than the film.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $3.6 million for The Glass Castle.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature

Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl and Maya Rudolph are among the stars that return for this sequel to the 2014 film. The Nut Job brought in $64 million domestically and another $57 million overseas.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $13.2 million for The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature.

Annabelle: Creation

The latest film in the Conjuring universe hits theaters this weekend with the release of Annabelle: Creation. This film is a sequel to 2014’s Annabelle.

Michael O’ Sullivan, writing for The Washington Post, calls this fourth film in the Conjuring franchise “scary good.” His is one of the more positive reviews of the film. Many reviews point out that Creation brings nothing new to the genre. Considering the previous three films debuted in the $40 million range, plenty of people are alright with how things are.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $31.4 million for Annabelle: Creation.

Make It A Redbox Night With Going In Style

Michael Caine, Alan Arkin and Morgan Freeman star in this Zach Braff-helmed remake of 1979’s Going In Style. While the film made just $85 million worldwide, it had an estimated budget of just $25 million. Any film called “hilariously heartwarming” has to be worth a couple bucks at your local Redbox.
