Recapping Last Weekend

Last weekend, the overall gross at the box office was just more than $69 million. You have to go back to the weekend of September 5-7, 2014 to find a lower overall gross. Guardians of the Galaxy topped the charts with $10.4 million in its sixth weekend of release. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was just behind at $6.5 million.

Last weekend, The Hitman’s Bodyguard led the slow weekend with $10.3 million in its second weekend of release. Leap! was the top debut film with $4.7 million in receipts.

Birth of the Dragon made $2.7 million, which was slightly more than the $2.6 million that the Mayweather vs McGregor boxing match brought in from 532 screens across the country. The Bruce Lee biopic opened on 1,618 screens.

Opening This Weekend

Tulip Fever

Deborah Moggach has waited a long time for a film based on her novel to make it to the big screen. She published Tulip Fever, based on a Dutch painting she bought at an auction, in 1999.  She met with Steven Spielberg about his DreamWorks SKG production company bringing her story to theaters. Natalie Portman and Jude Law were set to star in the film and tulips were planted.

The closing of a tax loophole in the United Kingdom sunk the project.

Harvey Weinstein and the Weinstein Company ended up filming Tulip Fever in 2014, but it has taken until this weekend for the “love story about flowers” to make it into theaters.

The cast includes Matthew Morrison of Glee fame, Zach Galifianakis, Judi Dench, Jack O’ Connell, Cara Delevingne. Holliday Grainger, Dane DeHaan and Alicia Vikander.

Tulip Fever is opening on just 600 screens across the country, but will be playing at 5 theaters in the St. Louis area including Chase Park Plaza Cinemas, an AMC theaters several Marcus Wherenberg theaters and the Landmark Plaza Frontenac Cinema.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $1.9 million for Tulip Fever.

Make It A Redbox Night With Baywatch

Dwayne Johnson, Alexandra Daddario and Zac Efron lead the way in bringing Baywatch to the big screen. I saw this movie in theaters and enjoyed it. Of course you shouldn’t go into into it expecting a cinematic masterpiece. Just rent it and enjoy.

You can now watch Baywatch in the comfort of your own home and no one will judge you. It’s among the movies now available to rent at your local Redbox. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Inconceivable and A Family Man are also now available to rent at Redbox.

You should probably rent Baywatch this weekend considering movies starring Dwayne Johnson and Alexandra Daddario have been scientifically proven to save lives.
