New Man Appiah Scores Lone Goal In Saint Louis FC Win

Last Wednesday, Saint Louis FC announced the signing of Emmanuel Appiah. On Saturday, Appiah scored the lone goal in a 1-0 STLFC win over the Richmond Kickers.

The win improves STLFC’s record to 6-8-4  (22 points) on the season and gives them two wins in the last three matches. Richmond is now 3-11-7 (16 points) on the season.

Saint Louis has earned seven points from its last five matches. Only 6 clubs in the USL’s Eastern Conference have earned more in that span. However, the club still find itself on the outside looking in when it comes to the USL playoff picture. The top eight clubs at the end of the regular season qualify for the playoffs. STLFC is currently in 13th place after 18 matches played. The club has, however, played 2-3 matches less than most teams in the conference.

Appiah, who played last season for the Swope Park Rangers, was named the USLsoccer.com Man of the Match for his play in Richmond. His goal came in the 46th minute and was assisted by Octavio Guzman.

Guzman has two goal and two assists in the last four games for Saint Louis.

Adam Grinwis again started and played the full 90 minutes in goal for Preki’s club. The clean sheet was his fourth of the season.

A scary moment for the local club came in the 16th minute. A Richmond player left his feet in a volley attempt and instead of connecting with the ball, his shin connected with the head of Milan Petosevic. The unpunished dangerous play left Petosevic writhing on the pitch in pain and STLFC fans confused. Luckily. the big Serbian forward was able to continue after a check by medical staff and a brief absence.

The confusion of local fans came from the seemingly inconsistent discipline doled out by USL referees. In last week’s match against Louisville City, Christian Volesky was given a straight red card for dangerous play when replays showed that his foot never made contact with the opposing player.

Richmond’s Franck Tayou was given a yellow card, however, later in the match for an attempted bicycle kick that resulted in less contact the opposing player.
