Recapping Last Weekend

Dunkirk soared to a $50.5 million opening last weekend to easily lead the weekend box office. Girls Trip, with a budget of just $19 million, scored an impressive $31.2 million opening last weekend. Both films meet box office estimates.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, on the other end of the spectrum, fell short of Todd M. Thatcher’s predicted $17.8 million box office debut.  The Luc Besson-helmed film starring Cara Delevigne had a production budget of $177 million.

Cara is still awesome, in case you were wondering, because of this epic rap battle with Dave Franco.

Opening This Weekend

Atomic Blonde

In Atomic Blonde, in theaters this weekend, Charlize Theron stars a rather well-dressed, and deadly, spy. In fact, The Telegraph says Theron’s “ice-cold super-spy makes Bond look arthritic.”  Huffington Post calls it “the year’s coolest movie.”

Don’t go in looking for holes in the plot. You will probably find some. Vox call Atomic Blonde “thrilling, gorgeous nonsense.”  Atomic Blonde the film is based on the graphic novels by Drew Lindsay.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $18.6 million for Atomic Blonde.

The Emoji Movie

The Emoji Movie, in theaters this weekend, probably won’t be put on the same pedestal as Inside Out, but it does share some similarities. While the characters in the Pixar film were based on individual feelings, Emoji gives life to typically inanimate emojis used in text messages. It really does have a whole storyline with Silicon Valley‘s T.J. Miller voicing Gene, the protaganist.

Patrick Stewart, Maya Rudolph and James Corden are also among the voice cast of The Emoji Movie.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $28.4 million for The Emoji Movie.

An Inconvienent Sequel: Truth to Power

The sequel to 2006’s An Inconvienent Truth, the ground-breaking climate change documentary is here with An Inconvienent Sequel: Truth to Power, in theaters this weekend. This sequel again looks at climate change, in this case progress made since the original film by Al Gore and others.

An Inconvienent Sequel, directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk, was nominated for the Golden Eye award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film being released in theaters isn’t the same on that was screened at the Sundance Film Festival.  It was re-cut after President Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Accords on climate change.
