Recapping Last Weekend

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 brought in $146.5 million in its debut over the weekend. The sequel’s opening propelled the overall box office to its biggest weekend in more than a month with a combined $194.7 million in receipts.

No other movie topped the $9 million mark over the weekend. The Fate of the Furious, in its fourth weekend of release, brought in receipts just shy of $8.6 million. F8 has now passed the $250 million mark domestically and is closing in on $1.17 billion worldwide.

Opening This Weekend

Snatched

The last time Goldie Hawn starred in a movie, Amy Schumer was four months into being able to drink alcohol legally. They star together in Snatched, which opens in movie theaters this weekend.

With Snatched, Amy Schumer returns to the big screen two years after her Trainwreck debut. Goldie Hawn stars in her first movie since 2002’s The Banger Sisters.

Schumer is Emily Middleton while Hawn plays the role of her mother, Linda. The pair sets out on a  mother-daughter bonding vacation fit for a Hallmark card. You could say things go more the way of a train wreck.

Writing for Forbes, Mark Hughes says there is a lot to like about Snatched. He points out the chemistry between Schumer and Hawn as well as the strong script from Kate Dippold. Dippold’s writting resume includes Parks and Recreation, The Heat and 2016’s Ghostbusters remake.

Jon Niccum of the Kansas City Star calls the film “disposable-but-funnier-than-expected.” There are plenty of reviews out there anti-Snatched to be fair. Check out the trailer below and if it looks good to you, go see it.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening of $22.1 million for Snatched this weekend.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Guy Ritchie may be best known for directing Snatch back in 2000. Another Ritchie-directed film hits theaters this weekend with King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. The director also gets a writing credit on the film.

This take on the classic King Arthur story stars Charlie Hunnam, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey and Jude Law. Reviews on the film vary widely, with a Vox writer calling it “surprisingly good.” The aforementioned Mark Hughes thinks it may be “the biggest flop of 2017.”

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening for King Arthur: Legend of the Sword of $25.4 million this weekend.
