Recapping Last Weekend

Alien: Covenant brought in just shy of $36.2 million over the weekend in its debut. Alien just beat out the $34.7 million third weekend of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to take the weekend box office crown.

Everything, Everything brought in $11.7 million in its debut, while Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul brought in $7.1 million.

Beauty and The Beast sold $2.5 million worth of tickets over the weekend, its tenth at the box office. The live-action remake is closing in on $500 million domestically and has passed $1.2 billion worldwide.

Opening This Weekend

Baywatch

Very rarely do I get to watch a movie before including it in the Weekend Movie Guide. I’m not fortunate enough to get the dvd in advance or anything like that. With the Wednesday opening of Baywatch, I was able to see it first. I enjoyed it. Know what you are going to see, though. This isn’t a film that is taking itself too seriously. There are plenty of crude jokes and nods to the original television series to go with cameos by David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson.

Dwayne Johnson takes the role of Mitch Buchannon while Zac Efron is Matt Brody, hotshot Gold Medalist looking to hang out on the beach and get a tan at the lifeguard stand. Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach and Ilfenesh Hadera round out the beach protectors, while Jon Bass tags along to provide the required Baywatch sexiness.

Priyanka Chopra switches sides from her Quantico role to play the villain here.

Pamela Anderson’s iconic swimsuit is filled in the film by Rohrbach, a graduate of Georgetown University. Rohrbach went to Georgetown on a golf scholarship and also is a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Rookie of the Year.  Rohrbach’s biggest role before this was in the CW digital series The P.E.T. Squad Files from Milo Ventimiglia.

Overall, the cast works very well together. I found it to be a highlight of the movie. Of course, I’m also a big Alexandra Daddario fan so that probably factored in.

One of my few complaints is that I wish Ilfenesh Hadera had a larger role in the film. Maybe in the sequel?

Also, I had read that Zac Efron had bulked up a little for this role, but HOLY COW! It is Baywatch, I guess, but wow. Efron and The Rock make quite the pair. A pair that will make you want to say “the hell with it” and get Hardee’s after seeing this movie.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts a Thursday-Monday opening of $39.4 million for Baywatch.

See The Circle This Weekend At Keller 8

The Circle and Gifted make their way to Keller 8 Cinema in South County this weekend.

The Circle

Despite starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, The Circle has not performed well at the box office. The Circle has grossed last than $20.2 million in four weeks of release in first-run theaters. It will attempt to make a few more bucks at the second-run theaters before coming to dvd in August.

This film also served as the last movie role for the late Bill Paxton.

Make It A Redbox Night With Keeping Up With The Joneses

The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, and Rock Dog are among the movies new at your local Redbox this week. However, let me reccomend Keeping Up With The Joneses.

Keeping Up With The Joneses

I watched Keeping Up With The Joneses and reccomend it for a good laugh. I saw Masterminds recently as well and enjoyed this a lot more.

Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot were all pretty enjoyable in their roles. Of course my opinion may have been skewed a bit because I kept picturing Hamm in his Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt role.

Keeping Up With The Joneses is well worth the $2 Redbox rental.
