Recapping Last Weekend

Split, the new film from M. Night Shyamalan, easily took the weekend box office crown for the second straight weekend.  The film brought in just shy of $27 million in receipts in its second weekend of release and passed $100 million at the worldwide box office in its first 10 days of release.

A Dog’s Purpose was the top debut over the weekend, despite calls from that horrible PETA organization calling for a boycott of the film, with $18.2 million in receipts. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter debuted to $13.6 million. It marked the lowest debut for a film in the franchise.

Opening This Weekend

The Space Between Us

Asa Butterfield, who most recently played Jake in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, stars in The Space Between Us alongside Britt Robertson. Robertson starred in Sparks’ The Longest Ride.

Is this A Walk To Remember meets The Martian? To my surprise, The Space Between Us is not based on a book by Nicholas Sparks. Nor is it based on a peice of fan fiction based on The Martian. Watch the trailer below and you’ll see why I was surprised.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $6.7 million for The Space Between Us.

Rings

The third movie in The Ring franchise hits theaters this weekend with the release of Rings. Julie Taylor and Leonard Hofstadter star in this film set 13 years after the events in The Ring.

Well, not exactly. Julie Taylor is of course Aimee Teegarden, who played the universally beloved daughter of Coach Taylor on Friday Night Lights. Leonard Hofstater is actually Johnny Galecki’s character on the show that everyone you know loves, The Big Bang Theory.

Ok so, the only true part of those statements is that those people play those parts. It’s also not true that they star in this film. Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz and Alex Roe are the main couple in this film, but they don’t seem nearly as interesting. Also, any time you can throw in a Friday Night Lights mention, you do it without asking yourself why. It’s like Bud Dry. Why Ask Why? Try Bud Dry.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend for Rings of $20.3 million.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, A Monster Calls and Live By Night all open at Keller 8 Cinema in South County this weekend.

Make It A Redbox Night

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Boo! A Madea Halloween, Tyler Perry’s Madea On The Run and Inferno  are among the movies now available to rent at your local Redbox.

I’m still not happy that Tom Cruise was cast to play the role of Jack Reacher, but I will be renting this one. If you like books and the action/suspense genre, do yourself a favor and pick up a Lee Child book.
