Recapping Last Weekend

The LEGO Batman Movie easily took the weekend box office crown in its second weekend of release, selling $32.7 milion worth of tickets. Fifty Shades Darker followed up its opening weekend with a $20.3 million second weekend. The Great Wall was the top debut film with just shy of $18.5 million. Fist Fight debuted to $12.2 million while A Cure For Wellness opened to $4.4 million.

Opening This Weekend

Get Out

Get Out, opening this weekend in movie theaters around the country, marks the directorial debut for Jordan Peele. It will be a tough act to follow up on. Peele got his start writing for MADtv and then created Key and Peele. Last year’s Keanu gave him his first writing credit in theaters. To say Get Out is getting good reviews is a bit of an understatement. It currently sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, something only 4 2016 films achieved.

Daniel Kaluuya stars in the film as a young man visiting his girlfriend’s parents for the first time. There is of course much more to the story. Allison Williams, who you may have seen in HBO’s Girls, makes her big screen debut alongside Kaluuya.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $16.3 million for Get Out.

Collide

Collide, which finally hits theaters this weekend, was at one time slated to star Zac Efron and Amber Heard. Their exit led to Nicholas Hoult and Felicity Jones being cast in the lead roles and the film’s title being changed from the original Autobahn. The collapse of Relativity Media meant a change of studios and release dates for Collide.

Filming for the film originally began in May of 2014, but Collide, which also stars Ben Kingsley and Felicity Jones, will finally see theaters this weekend.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $2.1 million for Collide.

Rock Dog

Luke Wilson voices the lead character Bodi in Rock Dog, in theaters this weekend. His voice is joined by a vocal cast that includes J.K. Simmons, Eddie Izzard, Lewis Black, Keenan Thompson, Mae Whitman, Jorge Garcia, Matt Dillion and Sam Elliot.

Rock Dog is the first big-budget animated film to come out of China, albeit with a lot of Hollywood help. Ash Bannon, who co-directed Toy Story 2, directs.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $4.4 million for Rock Dog.

Make It A Redbox Night

Hacksaw Ridge, Manchester By The Sea, and Bad Santa 2 are all now available to rent at your local Rebbox this week.

While Dog Eat Dog, starring Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe, is sure to be worth a rental, I suggest picking up Manchester By The Sea. The film distributed by Amazon Studios has been nominated for multiple awards. Watch the trailer below.
