Meryl Streep Takes On President-Elect Donald Trump

Actress Meryl Streep was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award last night and used her speech to blast U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Her arrows included Trump appearing to mock a reporter during a campaign speech in 2015 and an apparent unwillingness to recognize a free press.

President-elect Trump gave a phone interview after the telecast and said he had not seen the speech. He added he was not surprised, however, pointing out Streep’s affection for candidate Hillary Clinton during the campaign. Meryl Streep campaigned for Clinton during the 2016 U.S. Presidential contest.

Trump responded to Streep this morning on Twitter in a series of tweets.

Streep’s criticism on Trump mocking a person with a disability stems from a November 2015 incident in Alabama. Trump was talking about the Paris terrorist attacks and claimed “Arabs” were seen celebrating after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. In a later television appearance, Trump brought up an article in the Washington Post by Serge Kovaleski as proof backing up what he said. Afterwards, in another campaign experience, Trump was claiming Kovaleski was backing away from his original story when the alleged mocking happened.
