Recapping Last Weekend

Finding Dory again took the weekend box office over the weekend with $41.8 million in receipts in its third weekend of release. The animated sequel was followed closely by two debuts, The Legend of Tarzan and The Purge: Election Year. Both films wildly overshot opening estimates with Tarzan‘s $38.5 million more than doubling expectations. Election Year managed $31.5 million over the weekend.

The BFG was a disappointment in its debut with $18.77 million in ticket sales. Independence Day: Resurgence rounded out the top five with $16.7 million in its second weekend of release.

Opening This Weekend

The Secret Life of Pets

IGN calls The Secret Life of Pets a “frenetic ball of energy” in its review of the newest animated film from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment. The talent recruited to voice the mischievous pets and other characters in the film includes Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Ellie Kemper, Dana Carvey and others.

Does the trailer alone put this film on your watch list? It does for me. Don’t expect Up, but expect to have some fun and enjoy The Secret Life of Pets this weekend.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts and opening weekend of $73.7 million for The Secret Life of Pets.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

A foursome of Zac Efron, Adam Devine , Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza sounds like a key ingredient in a comedy that many will find hilarious while critics are so-so on it. While Kendrick is hilarious and a woman dreams are made of, her film record is about as flaky as Plaza’s well-received character in Dirty Grandpa. She did, however, see breakout success alongside Devine in the Pitch Perfect films. Plaza was one of the few well-regarded parts of Dirty Grandpa alongside Efron and Robert De Niro. Efron is coming off Neighbors 2, which topped $100 million worldwide and got better reviews than you would expect.

With all that being said, I am optimistic about Mike and Dave. Stephanie Merry says the film is “uproarious and flamboyantly raunchy” in her review of the film. Bill Zwecker is among the critics that points out the excellent performances by Plaza and Kendrick.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $13.5 million for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne star in the comedy/drama/romance The Meddler, now showing at Keller 8 in South County. Sarandon is a newly-widowed mother who travels from New York to Los Angeles with dreams of starting a new life. She ends up smothering her daughter (Byrne) a wee bit too much.

X-Men: Apocalypse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows have both moved on to second-run theaters and are showing this weekend at Keller .
