Saint Louis FC Looks To Topple Colorado Springs Switchbacks

Saint Louis FC will take on Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC this Saturday, July 23, in a United Soccer League match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park outside of St. Louis.

As I said last week, every game at this point in the season is an important one for Saint Louis FC. Colorado Springs (9-5-4 31 pts) comes to town this week sitting one point out of the top spot in the USL’s Western Conference. The local squad (6-8-5, 23 pts) clings to the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference by single point due what fans hope is just a mid-season slump.

Colorado Springs had a chance to take over first place in the USL West on Wednesday at home, but a late Swope Park goal resulted in a 1-1 tie. The Switchbacks are coached by St. Louisan Steve Trittschuh. Trittschuh, a native of Granite City, played one season with STLFC owner Jim Kavanaugh for the St. Louis Steamers indoor soccer team and helped the St. Louis Ambush win the 1995 NPSL championship. During his playing days he also played in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League and Major League Soccer.

Mike Seth leads Colorado Springs in scoring with 5 goals and 4 assists in 18 games played. Martin Maybin also has scored 5 goals on the season for the Switchbacks. The team signed Conor Doyle, formerly of the MLS’s Colorado Rapids, earlier this week. He started for the team against Swope Park.

Saint Louis FC fell 2-0 to the Tulsa Roughnecks last weekend in Tulsa. It was the latest poor result in the mid-season slump for the club. The team hasn’t won since beating Portland Timbers 2 1-0 on June 25.  Head Coach Dale Schilly is on the hot seat with some fans, as evidenced by the latest St. Louligans podcasts. Schilly made a significant change to the lineup against Tulsa, starting Vince Cicciarelli and using leading-scorer Irvin Herrera as a second half substitute. The change very-nearly resulted in a first-half goal, but the redirect went just wide as you can see below in the animated GIF.

Speaking of the fans, the All Fleur One Initiative launched their website today. The Initiative is a partnership between Saint Louis FC and fans, such as the St. Louligans, working towards bettering the St. Louis area through charity engagements and other service work.

A limited number of tickets still remain for Saturday night’s contest. You an purchase them through SaintLouisFC.com or by calling 636-680-0997. Be sure to ask about the Beat The Heat ticket package that includes 4 General Admission tickets, 2 GA Flex tickets and a STLFC cooler backpack for $69.

The theme for this Saturday’s game at Marshall Wireless Stadium is “Movie Night” with a Paparazzi Fan Photo Shoot planned as well as sneak peak movie pass giveaways panned. The first 1,500 fans will also receive a special, limited-edition Saint Louis FC movie poster. The club held a fan contest on Twitter to determine what poster would be given away. The winning poster features the club’s Jamaican-born players on a Cool Runnings poster. The poster that failed to win featured captain Chad Bond.
