Recapping Last Weekend

Deadpool easily took the weekend box office crown in its third weekend of release. Ryan Reynolds and company pulled in more than $31 million in ticket sales. It will likely pass the $300 million mark domestically by Friday night and has already earned more that $620 million worldwide.

Gods of Egypt was the top-earning debut film over the weekend, although with a budget of $140 million, its $14 million opening isn’t very impressive. Kung Fu Panda 3 finished in third place, earning just shy of $9 million in its fifth weekend. Risen earned $6.8 million and Triple 9 closed out the top five with $6.8 million.

Eddie The Eagle earned just more than $6 million in its debut.

Zoolander 2 made $2.23 million in its third weekend of release. It also fell out of 1,444 theaters around the country between its second and third weekends of release. Safe to say this one won’t be in theaters much longer.

What I Saw This Week

I enjoyed Triple 9 for the most part. It’s a pretty intense film. Definitely not for the squeamish. I wasn’t a fan of the ending, but everything leading up to that was pretty good.

Opening This Weekend

Zootopia

Disney’s latest animated film is set to make a bunch of money in its debut this weekend. It’s not likely to make Deadpool money, but it will make a solid chunk of change. As you would imagine, children will fill many of the theaters, along with their parents. Zootopia is apparently also being marketed to the NSFW “Furry” community.

Mark Hughes wrote in Forbes that Zootopia “is the best Disney film since Beauty and the Beast.”

Todd M. Thatcher predicts a $54.4 million opening weekend for Zootopia.

London Has Fallen

London Has Fallen is the sequel to 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen. Olympus was the 2013 film with Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman. It was not the 2013 film with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. That was White House Down.

Scott Mendelson wrote in Forbes that this sequel is “less entertaining and more offensive” than the original. Variety came out particularly hard against this film, calling it “xenophobic” and a “cement-headed sequel”, among other things.

Other reviews basically say that if you are considering voting for Donald Trump, you will like this movie. You’ll also likely find this movie enjoyable if you liked the original, or realize that it’s a movie not a documentary.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts a $24.6 million opening weekend for London Has Fallen.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

In a move that I find pretty surprising, The Huffington Post has a story up about how Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is much better than the trailers make it seem and is being marketed poorly.

The Washington Post says that Fey’s Kim Baker character in WTF seems made for her.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an $8.4 million opening weekend for Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

The Other Side of the Door

The Other Side of the Door is this weekend’s horror movie entry. The film focuses on a couple, Sarah Wayne Callies and Jeremy Sisto, who are raising a family in India. There’s of course a situation where they aren’t supposed to open a door but do and something bad happens.

The film is not “based on true story” by any means, but there are Indian temples of death that are pretty scary in their own right.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts a dismal $2.1 million opening weekend for The Other Side of the Door.

A trial that could have huge implications started this week as the trailer of Hulk Hogan versus Gawker has started. The “free-speech battle royale”, as Wired calls it, revolves around a sex tape Gawker acquired featuring Hogan.
