Recapping Last Weekend

The total overall weekend box office gross came in at under $100 million for the first time this year. Kung Fu Panda 3  won the weekend box office for the second time in its second weekend of release with $21.2 million in receipts. Hail, Caesar!, in its debut weekend, brought in $11.35 million, which made it the only other movie to pass $10 million over the weekend.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens crossed the $900 million mark domestically with just shy of $7 million in ticket sales. With $1.1 billion in foreign ticket sales, the film has now made just over $2 billion worldwide. It’s firmly in third place for all-time worldwide gross, about $175 million behind the second-place film, Titanic.

The other two movies opening over the weekend were The Choice and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The Choice became the lowest-opening Nicholas Sparks by far, with just more than $6 million in ticket sales. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies brought in $5.3 million.

What I Saw This Week

The only movie I saw last week was Hail, Caesar! I didn’t think the film would be very good, in fact, I shorted it on HSX.com. It met my expectations and wasn’t very good. I thought George Clooney was good in it, but the other actors and actresses were very poorly used. The cameos that we saw in the trailer were about all that we see from them.

Opening This Weekend

Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds is expected to sit high atop the weekend box office this weekend with his starring role in Deadpool. Scott Mendelson wrote in Forbes that this film could very well be the “first outright blockbuster R-rated comic book superhero adaptation“. Yes, it is rated R. That means DON’T TAKE YOUR KIDS TO IT.

If you’re going to see this film this weekend, make sure you stay through the credits. A Deadpool 2 is already being worked on and Ryan Reynolds has said he’d like for his character to have a boyfriend in it.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts a $58.2 million opening weekend for Deadpool.

Zoolander 2

Zoolander opened back in September of 2001 to $15 million in its opening weekend and $45 million during its domestic run on a budget of $28 million. The film became a cult-classic on home video and now, just over 14 years later, Derek Zoolander and Hansel are back. The film is packed with celebrity cameos, but unfortunately former First Lady Laura Bush is not in the film.

Just like the first film, the sequel doesn’t exactly cater to the film critic audience. Stephen Holden of The New York Times called Zoolander 2 an “overproduced, chaotic, not very funny comic circus“. USA TODAY gave this film 1 1/2 stars out of four.

If you liked the original film, odds are you’ll feel you got your money’s worth going to see the sequel.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts a $20.9 million opening weekend for Zoolander 2.

How To Be Single

Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Alison Brie and Leslie Mann are among the ladies starring in this adaptation of Liz Tuccillo’s book, How To Be Single. The ladies have been on quite the press tour for the movie. Dakota Johnson and Leslie Mann made headlines when they flirted quite openly with a reporter interviewing them. The same pair were also a bit touchy-feely on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live. Rebel Wilson had some words for the women on The Bachelor while doing an interview about the movie.

While doing an interview with Seth Meyers about the show, Mann talked about how her husband, Judd Apatow, “had no game” when they started dating.

Reviews for the film have been about as scattered as they say the movie is. The New York Daily News called it “surprisingly fresh Valentine’s Day fare“.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an $18.7 million opening weekend for How To Be Single.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Keller 8 Cinemas welcomes Sisters, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Sisters and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.

The last film in the Hunger Games franchise has been out long enough that if you have any interest in seeing it, you’ve probably already seen it. So, I suggest going to see Sisters, a really funny movie starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Make It A Redbox Night

Among the movies coming to your local Redbox this weekend are The Martian and Love The Coopers. Surely you’ve head of Matt Damon’s The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott. It’s an award contender and a really good film.

Another film I enjoyed was Love The Coopers starring Olivia Wilde, Amanda Seyfried, John Goodman and Diane Keaton.
