Recapping Last Weekend

Deadpool managed to sell just shy of $56.5 million worth of tickets in its second weekend of release domestically. As or today it has passed the $500 million mark worldwide. Kung Fu Panda 3 finished second over the weekend with $12.5 million in its fourth weekend of release.

Risen was the top-earning debut film over the weekend with an $11.8 million opening weekend. The Witch was just behind at $8.8 million. Race brought in $7.35 million.

What I Saw This Week

I went and saw Race the other night and really enjoyed it. The story of Jesse Owens and the 1936 Olympics is really a great one and I thought the movie did it justice. Stephan James does a great job playing Owens and I was impressed with Jason Sudeikis as his coach, the legendary Larry Snyder.

Opening This Weekend

Triple 9

There’s a lot going on in Triple 9. A.V. Club calls is a “David Ayer film on steroids.” Even the Triple 9 poster has a lot going on, crediting 9 actors and actresses, including Casey Affleck, Chwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Gal Gadot, Woody Harrelson and Kate Winslet. Vulture calls the cast “bizarrely great.”

Todd M. Thatcher predicts a $6.9 million opening weekend for Triple 9.

Eddie the Eagle

Michael Edwards is a British skier who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics, He became the first representative of Great Britain to compete at the Olympic level in ski jumping. He’s better known as Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards and is the man Eddie the Eagle is based on.

The Chicago Sun-Times calls this film starring Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton Rudy on the ski slopes, with a little Cool Runnings mixed in.

If you’re curious about the real story of “The Eagle”, check out this story Smithsonian did on Michael Edwards. Also check out this story The Guardian did on Edwards the athlete.

Gods of Egypt

If the first time you heard about Gods of Egypt it had to do with it being another case of “Hollywood whitewashing” you probably aren’t alone. The film’s director apologized back in November for the casting, which includes Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Egyptian gods.

The Hindustan Times calls the film “complete and utter insanity.” Scott Mendelson writes in Forbes that Gods “offers a ridiculous amount of nutso fantasy entertainment.

Todd M. Thatcher predicts an opening weekend of $13.9 million for Gods of Egypt.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Keller 8 Cinema in South County welcomes a great selection of movies this weekend. Daddy’s Home, Norm of the North and The Finest Hours all make their way to the second-run theater.

Daddy’s Home, starring Will Ferrell as the stepdad and Mark Wahlberg as the biological father, is quite funny but it isn’t for everyone. If you are in a household in the same situation or grew up with one, you may want to think twice about seeing the film.

Netflix Set To Pick Up Jason Bateman Series Set In Lake of the Ozarks

Netflix has said to be closing in on acquiring the series Ozark starring Jason Bateman. Bateman will also direct and be one of the executive producers of the show. Ozark will focus on a man (Bateman) who moves his family to the Lake of the Ozarks area in Missouri amid a drug-money laundering incident.

No word on if any of the series will be shot in Missouri. Initial reports say filming will take place in New York and Vancouver. That likely means beautiful scenery that makes “The Strip” off Bagnell Dam look much classier than it is. Hopefully Skee-Ball will be featured in the show, somehow.

O.J. Simpson Not Happy With People v. O.J. Simpson

O.J. Simpson is said to not be very happy with FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story because it paints a picture that he is, in fact, a murderer. This with a grain of salt, however. It comes from a man who retired from Lovelock Correctional Center, where Simpson spends his time. Jeffrey Felix has written a book, being published soon, about his time around Simpson. He hasn’t ever talked to O.J. about the show, but says he did talk to him regularly when he worked there. Simpson is apparently up for parole next year.
