Hunger Games Again Takes Weekend Box Office, Krampus Opens Strong

The Hunger Games; Mockingjay – Part 2 took the weekend box office crown for the third weekend in a row, this time with $18.6 million in ticket sales in its third weekend of release.

Krampus opened with $16 million to barely beat out Creed‘s $15.5 million for second place. The film more than doubled many opening expectations, including the one from Todd M. Thatcher.

Check back on Thursday for my Weekend Movie Guide. I’ll have more on the weekend box office numbers as well as a preview of the movies opening this weekend, In The Heart of the Sea and Legend.

St. Louis Rams Lose Again, This Time To Arizona Cardinals

Despite a squirrel being on the loose in the Edward Jones Dome on Sunday morning and later running on the field,  the St. Louis Rams lost to the Arizona Cardinals yesterday by a score of 27-3. The Cardinals moved to 10-2 on the season while the Rams fell to 4-8.

Special Teams was the only unit to get a decent grade from Jeff Gordon at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Both Todd Gurley and Chris Long used the word “embarrassing” in talking after the game, according to Gordon’s column. Gordon’s co-worker Jim Thomas wrote about how coach Jeff Fisher says he is about of answers.

Carrie Fisher Gives Epic Interview To Good Morning America

Carrie Fisher was on Good Morning America last week with her dog, Gary, for an interview. She talked with GMA’s Amy Robach about how pretty Amy is, returning to play General Leia in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and more.  Her hilarious answers to questions and Gary being Gary make this interview excellent.

U.S. Women’s National Team Game Canceled Because U.S. Soccer Doesn’t Care About Them

Update

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati apologized to the USWNT for the “series of mistakes” that led to the cancellation of the game in Hawaii. A stadium from the Aloha Stadium manager calls into question the validity of part of what Gulati said.  Scott Chan and Charles Toguchi, the Stadium Authority Chair, told Hawaii News Now that U.S. Soccer signed off on the field days before players took issue with it.

Imagine if the 35,817 people that filled Busch Stadium back in April for the U.S. Women’s National Team were told on the morning of that game that it was being canceled. Imagine the disappointment. That’s what happened in Hawaii over the weekend. The USWNT was scheduled to play Trinidad and Tobago at Aloha Stadium as part of  the team’s Victory Tour after WINNING THE FREAKING WORLD CUP!

The game was supposed the be televised live on Fox Sports 1 and a large crowd was expected. Did something tragic happen? Did one of the teams come down with a team-wide flu? No, the game was canceled because the playing surface wasn’t suitable to play on, according to U.S. Soccer.

Actually, something tragic did happen to the team. Star midfielder Megan Rapinoe tore her ACL while training for the match. It’s likely she won’t be back in time for the Olympics. The USWNT’s Alex Morgan came out with a statement about how the conditions the team was forced to train on and expected to play on were horrible. The players were forced to decide between playing the game and likely having someone getting injured or protecting themselves and deciding not to play. Former USWNT player Shannon Boxx said she was happy for the players for standing up for themselves.

Aloha Stadium’s operations staff is definitely to blame in part but this debacle, but it’s clear that U.S. Soccer doesn’t care enough about its most successful team.  Former USWNT player and current ESPN analyst Julie Foudy tweeted that she is being told that U.S. Soccer is now looking to put together a system for checking out field conditions for the USWNT like they have for the U.S. Men’s National Team. It’s about damn time. The USWNT collectively wrote a piece for The Player’s Tribune about the need for equal footing.

Blueprints For Disney Attraction In St. Louis That Never Was Up For Sale

In the early to mid 1960s, St. Louis was undergoing an unprecedented building spree with the Gateway Arch and Busch Stadium under construction. Walt Disney himself wanted to add to that with a five-story indoor amusement park. Walt Disney’s Riverfront Square, as it was set to be called, never came to be because of a disagreement over who would pay for what. Disney wanted to pay for the rides and attractions but have St. Louis pay for the the building. St. Louis balked and there went that idea.

Blueprints for the planned park were drawn up in 1963 and are now up for auction.  The opening bid for the 13 pages of blueprints is set at $5,000. There have been zero bids on the prints, which are being auctioned through Invaluable.
