The Visit and The Perfect Guy

Recapping Last Weekend

Straight Outta Compton’s streak of weekend box office wins came to an end with the holiday weekend. War Room bested Compton‘s $8.6 million with $9.5 million in its second weekend of release. The religious flick has now made $24.8 million domestically against a budget of just $3 million. The siblings behind War Room, Alex and Stephen Kendrick, have been pleasantly surprised by the success of the film.

A Walk in the Woods, which I’ve heard is quite good, finished third over the weekend with $8.2 million in its opening weekend. The Transporter Refueled made $7.35 million in its opening. Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation rounded out the top five with $7.2 million in its sixth weekend of release.

The Visit

This movie looks absolutely terrifying. I’m kind of afraid of my own grandparents just after watching the trailer. Cary Darling over at the Chicago Tribune gave M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit three stars. Scott Mendelson writes in Forbes that this film is a “glorious return to form“. Lucy O’Brien over at IGN also praises The Visit. Ignatiy Vishnevetsky of A.V. Club joined in on the Shyamalan praise-train by calling this a creative comeback for the director.

The Visit is expected to bring in $15-$17 million in its debut this weekend.

The Perfect Guy

Sanaa Lathan stars in The Perfect Guy along with Michael Ealy. Lathan’s character begins dating a guy (Ealy), who seems a little too perfect. Lathan, who got her start with Love & Basketball, has been on quite the media tour for this film. She talked “male eye-candy” with Entertainment Weekly, joined Ealy to talk with ComingSoon.net and the cast debated if The Perfect Guy is the perfect date movie. Oh she also talked about showering.

While the cast has done a lot of talking about the movie, the critics haven’t because The Perfect Guy wasn’t screened for critics.

Screen Rant is predicting a $16.2 million opening for The Perfect Guy.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Keller 8 Cinema in South County welcomes Southpaw, Shaun the Sheep Movie, Paper Towns and Hitman: Agent 47.  I’ve seen Southpaw and Paper Towns and enjoyed both. If I had to choose only one to see this weekend in theaters, I’d pick Southpaw with Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams and Forest Whitaker.

Make It A Redbox Night

Redbox welcomes The Age of Adaline, Unfriended and Just Before I Go, among others, to its magical red boxes this week.

I loved The Age of Adaline with Blake Lively and Harrison Ford. Lively stars as a woman who was given the “gift” of immortality when she was just 29.

Cruise has worked with Liman on Edge of Tomorrow and Mena, which comes out in January. It’s reported he wants to star in Luna Park.

Marvel’s Jessica Jones To Netflix In November

Ronda Rousey Will Star In Road House Remake

Patrick Swayze epically played bouncer Dalton in 1989’s Road House. Now, because Hollywood executives have zero original ideas, UFC fighter Ronda Rousey is set to star in a remake of the movie. The MGM-backed remake doesn’t have a production or release date, but it will fit into Rousey’s fight schedule.
