Miley Cyrus Makes Headlines Hosting 2015 MTV Video Music Awards
That’s really the best way to describe Miley Cyrus hosting the MTV Video Music Awards last night. CNN’s roundup of the event was titled “MTV VMAs 2015: What in the world happened?” The Parents Television Council fired off a statement last night that took issue with Miley talking about The Pot and her “wardrobe malfunction”. They also said MTV was guilty of “perpetual blatant sexualization“. The PTC likely has had the statement written ever since it was announce Cyrus would be hosting the event.

Miley Cyrus also likely really confused the 2015 VMA crowd with her performance with the Flaming Lips. The performance also featured quite the random assortment of backup dancers.

Kanye West Accepts Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award
Taylor Swift presented Kanye West with the 2015 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The pair have moved past that infamous VMA incident from 2009. Kanye gave a rather interesting acceptance speech while Taylor and Kim Kardashian looked on. He also announced that he will run for the presidency of the United States in 2020.

Justin Bieber Cries On-Stage After VMA Performance
Justin Bieber took the VMA stage to perform last night for the first time in five years. Bieber performed a mashup of his songs ‘Where Are U Now” and “What Do You Mean” and appeared to be overwhelmed by the positive response from the crowd. Bieber appeared to break down in tears of joy after the performance. Watch Justin Bieber’s 2015 MTV VMA performance here. The Biebs displays some stellar dance moves and also some flips while suspended above the crowd.
Taylor Swift Premieres “Wildest Dreams” Video
Prior to winning the Video of the Year award for “Bad Blood”, Taylor Swift premiered her video for “Wildest Dreams” during the VMA pre-show. Taylor is joined in the video by Scott Eastwood and some exotic animals like lions and giraffes. Joseph Kahn directed the video.

In what has been a frequent happening at awards shows recently, Taylor Swift won multiple awards last night. She picked up the Video of the Year award for “Bad Blood”, the Female and Pop Video of the Year awards for “Blank Space” and the Best Collaboration award with Kendrick Lamar for “Bad Blood”.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Perform ‘Downtown” In Downtown LA
Downtown Los Angeles got a performance of the newest song from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, “Downtown” on its streets during the show last night. Kanye West does not appear to be a fan of “Downtown”. Macklemore also performed “Growing Up” and ‘Can’t Hold Us” on the outdoor stage. Demi Lovato and Pharrell Williams performed on the stage set up outside the theater as well.

Matt Carpenter Hits 20th Homer, Gets Golf Cart
Matt Carpenter hit his 20th home run of the season yesterday and sent Adam Wainwright shopping. Wainwright made a bet with Carpenter during spring training that he couldn’t hit 20 home runs this season. Carpenter said when he did accomplish the feat Wainwright should buy him a golf cart. Wainwright will now be buying Carpenter a golf cart painted in the colors of Texas Christian University, Carpenter’s alma mater. Matt’s previous career high for home runs in a season was 11.
Concussion Trailer Premieres
Will Smith will play Dr. Bennet Omalu in Concussion, which hits theaters in December. Omalu is the doctor the first discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in the head of former NFL player Mike Webster. The movie focuses on Omalu’s discovery and his quest to make the NFL and other acknowledge the issue.
Epix Leaving Netflix For Hulu
Epix and Netflix will end their partnership at the end of September and Hulu will begin streaming movies from Epix in October. Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos wrote in a post on the company’s blog that ending the agreement will clear the way for Netflix to bring subscribers more original content and movies from other providers, like a new partnership with The Walt Disney Company. Variety‘s Todd Spangler writes that while Netflix will lose blockbuster movies like The Hunger Games to Hulu, the move is a win for Netflix.
President Obama Renames Mount McKinley
Ahead of his trip to Alaska, which will make him the first sitting U.S. President to visit the Alaska Artic, President Obama announced that he is changing the name of Mount McKinley back to Denali, its original name. The mountain always has been known as Denali to Alaska locals and the fact that it was ever known as Mount McKinley is fairly bizarre.
Straight Outta Compton Wins Weekend Box Office
For the third time in as many weekends Straight Outta Compton won the weekend box office. The film pulled in $13.2 million in its third weekend to beat War Room by just over $2 million. Never heard of War Room? It only played on 1,135 screens around the country over the weekend compared to Compton‘s 3,142. Alex Kendrick’s religious film was made for just $3 million and its numbers shouldn’t have surprised anyone, according to Forbes contributor Scott Mendelson.
Zac Efron’s We Are Your Friends bombed in spectacular fashion in its opening weekend. The film made just $1.8 million on 2,333 screens across the country, giving it an average of just $772 per screen.

Ad agency OpusMúltipla made this anti-smoking spot for the Paraná Health Department in Brazil. In the video João Cândido, who lost his vocal chords to larynx cancer, plays a newstand vendor interacting with smokers as they purchase the cancer sticks.
