Recapping Last Weekend

As expected, Minions ran away with the weekend box office. The animated flick brought in $115.7 million in its debut. Jurassic World was a distant second with $18 million in its fifth weekend and Inside Out closed out the top three $17.67 million. Terminator: Genisys fell 48.8 percent in its second weekend to $13.8 million. The Gallows closed out the top five as it brought in $9.8 million in its debut.

Self/Less and Ryan Reynolds opened with $5.4 million over the weekend.

Ant-Man

Not familiar with Ant-Man? Vox can catch you up on “Marvel’s most important third-string hero“. Paul Rudd is tasked with playing the superhero on the big screen. Rudd certainly did his research on ants. He also did his work in the gym. USA TODAY says that at times, Ant-Man is the best film in the Marvel universe. Speaking of the Marvel universe, don’t miss this Captain America: Civil War Easter egg in the film. Also, you have to respect how hard it was to get this movie to theaters. Marvel’s Kevin Feige sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about Ant-Man, the Marvel universe and more.

The Guardian says that box office analysts are predicting a $62 million opening for Ant-Man this weekend.

Trainwreck

**Update: I saw Trainwreck last night and it is hilarious. The jokes you see in the trailer aren’t even the half of it. Also, if you’re paying attention just before Amy tells her co-worker about her romp with the doctor, you’ll notice The Libertine’s logo on a wall as they walk past.

If you’re reading this and remember Facebook before your parents got on it, it’s likely you know someone who has had seeing Trainwreck on their to-do list for a month of more. Amy Schumer’s romantic comedy was called a “hilarious 4-star ride” by the New York Post. Bill Hader and LeBron James . Hader fills the role of Schumer’s love interest. James plays himself, the best friend of Hader’s sports doctor character. It’s not like the film really needs Schumer to do more to get people to go see it, but Schumer is on the cover of the new GQ in the famous Princess Leia bikini from Star Wars. Some of the cast members also spoke to MTV News about their own bad dating experiences. Oh, and Schumer appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s show and was pretty hilarious.

Variety predicts Trainwreck, the latest film from Judd Apatow, will bring in between $18 and $20 million in its debut.

Check out the Trainwreck trailer below, but also check out this featurette on John Cena in the film.

Irrational Man

**Update: Irrational Man is only opening in New York and Los Angeles this weekend. The film will gradually start playing in more theaters throughout July before a nation-wide release on August 7.

The New York Post says that Irrational Man is the worst movie of Woody Allen’s career. Allen’s films aren’t really made for the masses. I wouldn’t call myself an expert on his career by any means, but I think that’s the right way to explain it. His films really appeal to a narrow group of people. If that group contains enough people, his film is profitable and he gets another job. Salon says that Joaquin Phoenix “almost saves Allen’s latest older man-younger woman opus“. That Salon piece is written by Andrew O’Hehir, who 1) is made Emma Stone has now appeared in two straight Allen movies he deemed terrible 2) thinks “Magic in the Moonlight was written by aliens and 3) wrote a piece back in 2014 looking at the how many of Allen’s films reflect his penchant for younger women, like his former quasi-step-daughter/wife,

So much Woody Allen talk may be unfair to Stone and Phoenix, but really, what did they expect when they signed on to this?

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Keller 8 Cinema in South County welcomes San Andreas this weekend. The Dwayne Johnson disaster flick has made just $150 million domestically, but $309 million overseas to give it a worldwide take thus far of $459 million.

Make It A Redbox Night

Redbox welcomes Unfinished Business, Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, Run All Night, The Lazarus Effect and Ex Machina. I enjoyed the first Paul Blart so of course I enjoyed the sequel. Run All Night was an alright movie, nothing special from Liam Neeson. Unfinished Business wasn’t anything special either. The Lazarus Effect with Olivia Wilde looks like it should be worth your $2 as well. I’d heard great things about Ex Machina.  I rented Ex Machina last night and enjoyed it. It’s one you really need to pay attention to and moves a little slow, but it’s a really fascinating storyline.
